I was referring to cases were 0 pages on website have traffic. I'm sure there are many like that.

Which is the case with like every single website. Not all pages are meant for ranking.

Seems that their case study was based on their content explorer which contains a lot of news articles. Articles on news sites mostly get their traffic from people browsing the site or like email subscribers.
