What is a good, well known alternative? I see a lot of mentions of companies but they all seem to be much smaller, bad reviews, etc.

AdSense is the largest ad network in the world.
There are no other companies of that size, however, AdSense is the lowest paying one.

CPA & AdSense (Display Advertising) are completely different things and in most cases require different types of websites/content/layout.
OP I wouldn't go there.
