Hey everyone,
Thanks for everyone that's submitted their details for me.
I've got the form up with all the data points I need, but I still need more people to volunteer.
Help me, here, guys. This is a VERY exciting study but I need MORE DATA. Submit your sites, and get your friends to submit too. I am the only person that will see this. No one, not my staff, not anyone I know will ever see the details. All that will be published is the results of the study, not individual sites, niches or anything at all related to any of your sites.
This is a real opportunity for us to beat google if we come together as a community. Share this thread, please help get some exposure.

Great, I'll send you the form via pm!
Your site is VERY valuable to me. Right now, I've only had 1 person who's gained positively or not been impacted. Those sites are super important, because without them it's hard to test the validity of the study on the group that dropped. If I have enough that gained or were neutral, I can test what I learn on the negative group against the neutral/winners group. I can also run analyses comparing the 2 groups if I have enough in both losers, neutrals and winners.

I'll be publishing the full results of the study and also creating a simpler article with guidelines based on it for those who don't want the heavy stats. All the data will be publicly available, but obviously not niches or urls. Just the data points. Nothing sensitive. Everything people send to me is kept confidential.

I don't see any major bias with the study.
There's nothing from selection bias, because I'm not selecting myself.
The questions on my form for the data collection don't contain any sort of opinion or try to push someone in one way or the other. They are very neutral/unbiased and just seek to get the raw data. I also check as best I can people's sites against their answers. So that would be a slight bias. People have a tendency to over-estimate their work. They view their content as better than it is, and their seo as less spammy than it really is, but I modify people's answers in cases where I feel this is the case.
I decided not to analyse the traffic percent increase as a dependent variable too because I feel there's bias there. A site that's had a 50% drop compared with one with a 10% drop for example could be because of confounding variables. For example they might be in a niche where there's just a LOT of sites that gained positively which forced the traffic drop, rather than this site losing traffic because it's 5x more negative than one wit a 10% drop. We just can't say a 70% drop is 7x stronger than a 10% drop. There are too many confounding variables. All we can look at is 3 groups, losers, neutrals and winners, and compare THOSE groups against each other.
If you've spotted any sort of bias I may have missed then feel free to share with me. Also, anyone is very welcome to share their expertise or find faults in my study.

Hi @splishsplash, I received your MP well but I have no interesting data because I was not affected by the update. However, there is something that could merit your interest. I use Google Analytic and several days ago I noticed something really interesting. I had optimize my site and install the analytic script on my server to improve the loading time. Google often updates its code and so I ended up with a script that was out of date and receiving no calls. My site will instantly start losing places. When I updated the script on my server, the site went up as quickly ...
You should ask those who lost on your form if they are using Google Analytics because I think they are not using it.
This could be a major factor.
I have another impression with the content already indexed which would then be enriched to improve the rankings but it would be difficult to demonstrate.

That's interesting indeed about the script.
Your site is in fact very valuable.
Let me explain why..
If I only have sites that have dropped, then I can only compare them with each other. This limits the type of statistical analyses I can do since I can only look for potential commonalities.
If I have 3 groups, sites that lost, sites that remained the same, and sites that gained, then I can compare all 3 groups which is where the real power is. I can run tests to see if they are from the same population, or unique populations based on the data point I'm testing.
Without this data, I have to resort to a much more inaccurate way of testing, which is to segment the losers into 3 groups, "small loss", "medium loss" and "large loss". It's much better to have "losers", "neutrals" and "winners" groups.
This is one of the biggest problems I'm facing now. People are assuming that I only want their site if they had a drop.
