Need advice on registering a domain please!

Well this will be the first domain that I have registered. I plan on registering it through godaddy and getting hosting with hostgator or justhost. Anybody oppose to this idea?

But now the main question. Do I need to register it privately, or under fake info? The site will be mainly white hat with some gray hat mixed in possibly. So if I register it with fake info, what exactly need to be fake?

Having used Godaddy for a long time, I advise to register your domain with Namecheap.com their shopping experience is a lot better (godaddy has like 5 steps filled with upsells) and you get free private whois.

As for hosting, never used Hostgator but have only heard good things about them.

Don't forget to search for coupons whenever you are going to grab a domain or hosting!

Everything you said is fine, dont really matter where u purchase the domain just make everything private, using a fake name really doesnt matter for one you will be a private domain but there is always paper trail no matter what if you pay for the domain with a credit card all your information has to line up and same with pay pal. I have over 5k domains 85% private and havent any issues... If Namecheap.com as yeahsure says offers it for free go with them.. Host gator is a great hosting company, rackspace as well there really is so many just get any linux hosting and ur good to go.

Why use fake info if its white hat site? You can use real info and just choose the private whois in your namecheap account...just my 2cent.

I would definately register with hostgator and have hostgator host. It will be a lot easier to set up especially for a nubee. Cost a couple bucks more but is worth it.

I use Vaioweb so i can pay with moneybookers and have never had any problems, free privacy too.

Thanks for that. I do plan on keeping this for more than a year. I've already bought the domain with namecheap for a year but if I remember to after it expires then I might repurchase it with name.com

Everybody should be careful about Godaddy. They shut down the domain with 1-2 complaints, and want 100-200usd for reopen. If you get another - they shut down it permanently.

go get something offshore or unpopular but have long establishment.
as far as hosting, better get shared hosting first with big space and big bandwidth @ first, then U can go up the ladder at a later time.

I agree. As I've been using domains. I've always purchased at namecheap. configuration is easy. it doesn't have floating and popping ADs around it. It doesn't also require sometimes i guess using ip addresses.

I also have godaddy domain, when somebody here at BHW offered to transfer free 1000 .info domains. I got one.

It's a bad idea to register domains with fake info. No. 1: It's hard to keep track of the fake info you use (if you are registering lots of domains). No. 2: If anything happens with the domain--like somebody tries to steal it from you by claiming to be the owner...you're sort of screwed.

If you are concerned with people knowing that you own the domain, get name privacy. Or if you really must register it under a name under than your own, use your business name. In Washington, I have a main LLC, but I can DBA (doing business as) certificates. Just register under your DBA names. That way, it's legit.

Thanks figgity, I decided to stop being stingy and spend an extra few dollars on private domain instead of fake info. And the first year is free with namecheap.
