You can do silos, that's how content really matters, mate. Content on it's own is rarely just enough to rank, though, you can build splogs to rank with garbage content that also works, but you will get a lot LESS traffic with splogs.

Need an update on this, as I'm starting to think this core update has had a major impacted how google views "unique" content.

Started to do a few experiments and have already posted two articles to split test the theory and have updated the content on an article that dropped from #1 to #4.

I'm certainly not seeing how this can be link related. PS: The pinterest pin for my above mentioned article is now #1. (crazy)

Did you try plotting out the different search engines to validate where that traffic is coming from?

Also check if they are unique visitors and you are not being hit by the same group of people for some unkown reason? What about the bounce rate? Any info on that?

Make sure you've got only one instance of the GA tracking code installed on your site. This can lead to conflicts in your analytics data.
