Noticed a fair few sites that allow free guest posting. Could I ask why blog owners do this?

To get free, fresh and quality content. Google loves that.
 
Free content. I also accept as well above 1500 words informational articles on my sites.
 
Free content is one good reason. Getting a blog up and running can be expensive if you hire writers or time consuming if you decide to write it yourself. Free guest posting creates a win-win situation for both parties.

Who told you that lie? Stop follow what people say and test yourself, nobody will give you the secret sauce, same reasons as some people say: no-follow, web 2.0, and other links have no value. If you follow what that Google engineers told you on Twitter, it's just bullshit to keep people stuck in the loop.
 
To get fresh and unique content. It will help them in SEO.

It would be better, if you suggest some sites which allow free guest posting!
 
"Only a few sites offer free guest posts" is a misomer. There over 1000 sites with good or great organic traffic that will post content without making you pay for it. IMers often emphasize the ones that charge to save time, since much more research or outreach is involved to get the editorial approvals with free sites.

To get new, fresh, quality content because "content is king" and it also help business owners to get good traffic towards their site.
 
I think guest posts are the best way to expand your network, increase your following, improving your online authority, it also helps in building credibility, increases your exposure as well and gives you an idea about what others think of your blog.
 
Many sites allow free guest posting. But you have to put that kind of effort to build quality content. That's one of the reason for buying links is more affordable sometimes.
 
It's rare to find sites these days that allow free guest posting. But I do come across sites and they do it mainly for content. You've to make sure to give them a good 1000-1500 word article!
 
In other perspective it's a win-win situation.
Because free and fresh content is good for guest posting site & who publish on guest posting site, they get high equity backlink to own site.
