It depends on when you start the site (if asking articles total) and the niche.
I have a site that gives damn good income just with five articles (5+ years old), but also we have a website containing a thousand articles and bring the Benjamin to the table without hassle (15+ years old site).
Many factors make a website profitable and successful. It's not just content. Such fucking SEO technique and other shit that related to your promotion (white+black method) will have an impact on the web.

You are right that SEO is important for pushing a website up in addition to content.
I have sites with 20 articles and others with 200 articles, so yeah totally agree this isn't such an important criterion really. You need content that converts at the end of the day.

The quality of your content will always trump quantity. Of course, there are some high-turnaround niches where Google will practically force you to churn out content on a regular basis, but even then your content will have to be at the very least decent.
With content, you will want to provide what others don’t, or at the very least what others give in insufficient quantities. Make your site stand out, and your audience will eventually take notice, assuming that you’ve also applied SEO and gotten some backlinks along the way. Before people start talking about your content, they will have to see it first.

The amount of content is not the matter, how much quality content you are creating that important and seo also need for a profitable website.

Not related to thread.
I have thousands of articles on my main site and add more every day. But this is appropriate given that it is news-related. Constant fresh content is imperative given the niche. There is no “one size fits all” answer to your question. It all depends on the specifics.

I have a general niche amazon affiliate site with 70+ articles, 40+ articles are of 4000+ words. How much traffic it is getting? 15 per day.
2 years back i was doing $1000+ with far less article written by same writer and i used to get 500+ traffic per day.
But now the market is very crowded and amazon hacve also slashed the commission 50%

It is, but they are worth it. Quality content and links bring in the $'s.

A good strategy content-wise is to build a site that contains pages (in case of WP pages seem to rank better than posts) that covers a topic as complete as possible. So each page is a subtopic. For one my sites I use more general subtopics such as comparisons, experiences, alternatives with the first page being introduction. It ranks very good with few backlinks, it's a niche though.
