Yes, later on, we will do internal linking as right now there are not enough articles on site we can link internally. External links also after 1 week or so.

I would create the external links before indexing your new posts on GWT. All you need is 1-2 for the size of your articles. This will help with topical relevancy and give Google a better understanding of what your article/site is about.

Content is king so, if it's high quality and you provide at least some traffic, the Big G should pick up.

So yeah, this should work. Again, depending on what the website is about and what your goal is.

I believe that you should not link other categories; this, in theory, will dilute the topical relevancy of what your categories and subcategories are about.
Take a look at this visual sitemap I created to demonstrate how I develop authority sites:

As you can see, the homepage links to the main categories and the articles link to each other within said categories.
To further explain: Red Article 1 can link to Red Article 2 & Red Article 3, but not to any of the blue or yellow articles.

Keep in mind, this is how I build my sites. Others may have their own theories and will disagree with me, which is fine.

Wow this is an ambitious experiment. I hope it works out. Eventually it will but it depends on your niche and use of keywords. A few comments seem to miss the point I think. I don't think you're worrying about ROI for at least a year or more. The length of the articles is probably fine depending on the niche. That's more commonly referred to as a silo linking structure right?

I created quality content of 1500-2500 words and I'm at like 40 articles right now and I was thinking of going over the internal linking structure at this point with a bit of content. Being that it's all in the same neighborhood it's always possible to cross-link but up to this point I've tried to just link to 2-3 other articles that logically cover content very closely related.

I agree, mix it up. Let the complexity and thoroughness of the content dictate the length.
