More than 99% of Italy’s coronavirus fatalities were people who suffered from previous medical conditions, according to a study by the country’s national health authority.

After deaths from the virus reached more than 2,500, with a 150% increase in the past week, health authorities have been combing through data to provide clues to help combat the spread of the disease.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s government is evaluating whether to extend a nationwide lockdown beyond the beginning of April, daily La Stampa reported Wednesday. Italy has more than 31,500 confirmed cases of the illness.

The Rome-based institute has examined medical records of about 18% of the country’s coronavirus fatalities, finding that just three victims, or 0.8% of the total, had no previous pathology. Almost half of the victims suffered from at least three prior illnesses and about a fourth had either one or two previous conditions.

More than 75% had high blood pressure, about 35% had diabetes and a third suffered from heart disease.
The median age of the infected is 63 but most of those who die are older.

Well, almost everyone above 30 years of age has or have had some illness that may impact their health status in that context, I find it a bit dishonest for the government to try and downplay the significance of what is happening.
High blood pressure is highly prevalent in men especially those who work in a office/from home/driving for a living etc and aren't fitness regulars, many are genetically predisposed to it as well. Smokers are a big part of the society still in the majority of the world. Heart irregularities from mild to more severe are common among these groups of people. Lots of people have had pneumonia at some point in their life, others have not as strong immune system and often get ill from infectious diseases like hepatitis, about 10% of the people world wide have diabetes etc, etc.

It's the first day of the lockdown here and people are freaking out.
The first cases have been announced on Friday. There were 3 people arriving from France.
Last night, it was confirmed that there are 9 cases right now here.
As it's a poor country, we are more concerned about those who live on the streets. The army asked them to go back home on Saturday night, but they don't have nowhere to live.
Luckily, the confirmed cases were all people arriving from abroad. There is still no case of people contaminated directly here.
I hope this 2-weeks-lockdown will be enough to prevent its spreading. Our country can't handle serious case like Italy or China.

It is not the tragedy that you describe here in Italy. I'm currently on a train crossing Italy in his whole length and I've only crossed 4-5 people with a mask. The 99.99% of the people is not concerned about it, the supermarket are not empty, people goes to work, and everything is just the same as routine. Precaution is okay, avoiding and cancelling public events on these days too, but this thing has been pumped a lot. Here in bhw we always refer to numbers and so as last update:
- Coronavirus in Italy : 100 people affected and 2 deaths (over 75y)
- Normal seasonal flu : 5kkk /year and 4-10k deaths a year

How are you handling this lock down? The rain isn’t fucking helping much is it. I’ve got a 5 year old that hasn’t left the house in days.. no bueno! praying for some sun to just lay in the yard ffs, now spain has extended the lock down to Easter.. at least they’re taking it seriously and acting fast, for once.

We're fine as we're out of the village. Got nice sunshine again today, but had 2 days of rain. At least the swimming pool is full.

Big difference where and the UK, the Spanish made lockdown law, as did rest of Europe. UK are making suggestions and advising people.

Beaches and parks in UK were crowded yesterday.... Kinda says it all.

Yeah it seems to be picking up today weather wise thank fuck! Makes the lockdown a bit easier if you can sit out back.

I know mate, wish the UK would get their shit together.. got a lot of loved ones there.

Lucky for us there is a shop on our resort which has been well stocked so no panic buying here, spanish seem to be adapting to the rules quickly which I was surprised at. Oh I’m counting those days down.. and praying there isn’t another extension! Keep safe.. better days are coming.

An old malaria cure may be redirected for the needs of COVID19 infected, it seems it has helped to a degree to patient treatment in China and South Korea, but no definitive cure so far, in general a legit and safe "cure" for viruses is kinda impossible to have.

I realise how this sounds. I'm sorry to the people who are directly affected by it, I do not mean to offend.

My meaning was that personally, I think that the UK is pretty well equipped to keeping it out and dealing with what gets in.
