Need help with a news website

Hi there, I'm trying to help a friend with his website.
It's a quite small niche, sports news for a local team, so of course I'm not trying to be huge. But this is totally out of what I usually do so I'm a little lost. Right now if you search for some player's name on Google it shows 3rd result, but if you search "*team name* news" it doesn't.
The website is 10 months old, so maybe it's too soon.
But I'm not only looking for Google tips, how could I help something so small become a bit more relevant?

Do focus on content and quality backlinks with use of that team name as keyword!

Thanks everyone for your replies! I definitely need to learn about backlinks because that seems to be the key. My friend creates good content and it updates twice a week, so that part is already covered.

I've already edited the wikipedia page for the team with a couple of links to the website
