It happens if you are fighting with big competitors or if you are targeting highly competitive keywords.
Look out the site which is outranking you, Analyse their SEO strategies.

Domain age and Traffic will play important in this kind of situation. It will be very hard to beat those kinds of sites.
Keep on build backlinks and post content frequently bring much more traffic from social media. You will improve ranking the top slowly.

took me 6 months to even start ranking for target keyword. Rankings been bouncing between 2-3 page for 2 months.

Don't focus on the metrics if you are looking to rank in search engine.
Just look out your traffic, is there any improvement in traffic or not?
If there is no traffic, find a other ways for bringing real traffic to your site

If you have put in efforts in quality content and link building then don't do anything non-sense now like PBN or keyword stuffing.

Write new posts on other low competition keywords which will establish trust with Google and Google will start trusting your site with high competition queries too.

quality adult pbns are hard to come by. I got like 250k backlinks. Comparing to other sites their backlink profiles are really low but obviously their DA is much higher than mine.

250k backlinks profile . You have to concentrate on the traffic links and Keyword rich niche guest posts to improve the link diversity. As default you have to focus more on Quality instead of quantity .
