How much do you charge per word?

Hi guys,

I recently created thread here asking for advice on where to offer my freelance content services online.

Upwork was suggested, which I swiftly set up a profile on. I've been lucky to have been offered a job on there already, they've asked me to specify my rate per word.

I don't want to push it and would like to a offer a fair deal (In GPB £)... Especially considering it'd be my first job on the platform. Can anyone suggest how much I should ask for? I've got 10+ years experience in the field.

It depends on what type of writing you're doing, and what niche. If you're doing technical writing, or direct sales copywriting, you should charge minimum 10 cents per word (USD, not sure about GPB).
If you're doing blog article writing in a not very technical niche, I would say the absolute minimum should be 4 cents per word. But perhaps ask for 6 c/pw.

I have bought articles worth $5 per 500 words and also $100 per 1000 words.
So, all depends on your writing skills

I just put a lot of effort into my profile and pitches!

I agree, at least $0.04 a word. Any less is just not worth the time. Congrats OP on your first Upwork job

I write for specific clients and get a flat rate per piece, but it comes down to about $0.07 or $0.06 per word. Some articles I get paid a lot more because of importance, but that's the average

That's incredibly cheap for good content. Even iWriter pays more than that at the top tier (I recently did 500 words for $30 on there)

For a beginner 3 cents per word should be fine, but for someone with 10+ years of experience at least 10 cents per word should be minimum.

This question is easy to answer, but depends on your ability to write. Think about how much you value your time (x GBP/hour) and then how long it will take you to write those articles.
