Why is the world shutting down?

It's also interesting nobody has mentioned North Korea in all of this. They are the only country (or will be) that doesn't have a single case.
That already doesn't appear to be true:
https://www.businessinsider.com/almost-200-north-korean-soldiers-died-coronavirus-2020-3
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11128...s-3700-quarantined-hits-kim-jong-un-military/

Just because officially there aren't any reported cases in a country like North Korea, it doesn't mean, there isn't any.

North Korea is not as closed as you may think. As a North Korean, you might have a hard time leaving the country (unless for work), but they had over 350k Chinese tourists last year and many North Koreans work abroad (they don't even need a permit, if they work in China and stay under 90 days). Around 50k North Korean indentured workers in China were obliged by U.N. sanctions to return to North Korea at the end of 2019, when the virus was already spreading in China.

There's something called 'Global Health Security Index', North Korea is almost dead last from 200 countries. They basically pulled zeroes in terms of biosecurity, biosafety, emergency preparedness and response planning, exercising response plans, emergency response operations, risk communication, medical countermeasures and personnel deployment, infection control practices and availability of equipment. The medical infrastructure is almost non-existent outside their capital and even there you can imagine the state.
The generally weakened health, malnourishment of most of the population won't help either.

If there's an outbreak, they stand no chance to control it.

Fair enough. Of course, this is a contagious disease I am aware of that, but it also has a 90-95% recovery rate and apparently children don't seem to be affected or show much symptoms of it (hints clues as to understanding the immune system and how to combat this or come up with a vaccine) although of course they are carriers, too. I also think the way they show the stats is misleading. For example, they show China has 85,000 cases but 70,000 have recovered...there only about 13,000 active cases in China. The way they show the stats is how many were infected in history since it started. It makes it seem like there are more people infected than actually are.

There are a lot of unknowns, but guess what, almost everything else is still unknown, too. We don't know what exactly causes cancer? That seems fishy to me after how many decades we've been battling it? It's obviously in our food but we don't know what? It's obviously in the air we breathe (pollution, toxins?) but nobody is wearing a mask. But for covid19, suddenly everyone is scared? They've discharged 70,000 people (recovered)....that means they are freely roaming around in the public and if they are recovered but still having the virus in some sort of incubation stage and suddenly we're gonna realize that all the recovered people were actually still carrying it and infecting others seems like a far stretch to me more so playing on the fears and paranoia. It would make for a great movie idea for sure.

For me, while this is very serious and it's going to change the world in many ways because if the virus was a far deadlier one, we would be looking at the end times, this isn't the end bringer. It's a good test for us. It's a little glimpse of what is to come in the future and the whole potential behind biological warfare and weapons.

The greater battle to me is the fight for humanity. This whole idea of "elbow bumping" is the kinda stupidity that I feel we are all heading on. Avoid human contact...we're heading more and more towards the WALL-E world where all physical living and interactions will cease to exist as we become more isolated and cybernetic (digital lives will take over physical lives) and that's why I'm really apprehensive about all this.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it (Thomas Jefferson).

It's also interesting nobody has mentioned North Korea in all of this. They are the only country (or will be) that doesn't have a single case. They've perfected it.
Keep the borders closed. The rest of the world is too open door policy and too loose all for the sake of money/capitalism.

I highly doubt North Korea has no cases. It's a media black hole and it wouldn't surprise me if they are being ravaged by it. China is one of the few countries that North Korea trades with so I would guess the chances that they are unaffected are slim.

Mexico also has no reported cases because their president doesn't believe it's a serious health concern and is doing nothing about it.

No testing would mean no confirmed cases. Or testing and not reporting.

This is more serious issue until found solution for vaccine. It affects all industry as well as online travel booking, hotel, food, flight cancelled.

Schools are closed in Japan and many other countries. Market are crashed.

There is one movie called krish 3 hindi movie. Same thing happening like current situation.

Be safe, Help Each Other.

It is very possible that they are NOT reporting anything to the outside world, but not likely. North Korea would have no reason to hide and lie behind this. If they do have cases, why wouldn't they want to be open and honest about it because they could get aid and help. The whole world is working together and in need of help so NK has nothing to gain by lying and pretending they are unaffected if they really are affected. So I don't think so. If they have a case, they will report it.

North Korea in a situation like this would actually be the model society because they follow orders to the tee. They will not riot, they will not disobey, they will all conform like robots and do exactly what the great leader says. That's what all the countries should be doing but no, most of the countries (non-east asia) are quite disorganized and not cohesive society. That's why I predicted that even when China had all those soaring cases, that the West would suffer worse because their societies are not as harmonious, cohesive, and conformist like east asia. It might be a negative in some aspects, but in this aspect, the fact that everyone is very singular and very similar, the majority of the society follows the orders and they all do things together in unison. It will be much more difficult in a place like America where the land is so vast and diverse, the customs, the cultures, the differences in peoples will make it more difficult for them to contain the spread. It's going to be very bad in the West as we are already seeing in Italy, all the other european countries picking up steam and America is vastly under reported. 1700 cases is vastly under reported. I would estimate there are at least 10,000-20,000 cases in the USA right now but they don't know it and they are too slow at tracing the path and finding the routes....it's already spread out of control in the US....even NBA stars got infected already and NBA/NHL had to suspend their season...probably for good.

It needs to shut down so that weather gets warmer and we get beyond this crisis. It's sad what is happening, although it's not a final shut down. Everything should be better and i hope for less casualties.
Once weather becomes warmer, things will chill and hopefully by September they have a healthy and tested vaccine. I'd avoid public places, but not panic so much. Panic is what is killing people and forcing market go down and manipulators.

That's a big warning buddy and it's not done yet.

My opinion is that so much people on this world aren't happy with their lifes. Why? Because if they have done everything they planned in their life, they shouldn't be so scared about a tiny virus that might potentially kill them. I've done everything I wanted so far in life, so I'm not scared at all. In the end... we all die sooner or later.

Does anobody have information that does NOT come from the media or 'authorities'?

Do you know someone personally who is diagnosed with COVID-19?

Do you know someone personally who has recovered from confirmed COVID-19 infection?

Do you know someone personally who has died from COVID-19?

No details, just if you personally know of. Really curious to know..

Meaningless opinion without empathy for others. One clear message we're hearing from medical staff in Italy is this disease is not just taking older people. Plenty of people with friends, family and things they still want to do. Especially those with underlying conditions.

If you're that nihilistic about your own life that's your call. But please don't spread this nonsense to others because it just puts others at unnecessary risk.

the weather is something that high possibly doesn't impact the virus at all - and panic is what made humans survive for thousands of years. Having a tested vaccine this year is also highly impossible. The shut down is not made for anything else then trying to prevent high numbers of people getting sick at the same time - 60-70% will get in touch with the virus no matter what you do - its all about not having 60-70% sick at a small timeframe.

I'm hypothesizing that more people quarantined means increased internet traffic. Might become the Golden Age of blogging? People will need something to read / do.

:D The real business man, capitalist. :D

It's politics and has nothing to do with the virus. More people died this year from Flu, Cigarettes, Alchohol, hit by cars this year than from coronavirus. Not saying that virus is not dangerous, as it is if you're both old and in bad health already, but it's not that dangerous to shut businesses. The real reason is politics, not a virus, money is being made (and lost), sanctions applied and so on.

It's somewhere in between these two:

If Angela Merkel is right at some point 50-70% of the world population will be infected. That's 4-5 billion people.

Well, the death rate in China atm is around 4% but it could be worse because there are 4000 more people in critical condition.

In Italy, the death rate is much worse because they were way less organized than China.

If we don't stop this virus in a month or so, we could end up having more casualties than WW2.

Why the world is shutting down?

I have a much better question.

Why it did not happen at least a month before.
