Sure, well I do a it via two methods.
1. I search Google for something like site:http://www.yelp.co.uk "closed" + "hotel" or whatever you're looking for. It brings up a list of businesses that are likely to be closed. Some will have a website, some not and some might have their website registered but in a limbo and basically waiting to drop. Not all will have good links; however, the more you search the more good ones you find. This method does take a little legwork but is free apart from a subscription to Majestic SEO or something similar.
It's worth metioning that the example above is one of many. Depending on your niche and locality - there might be multiple small directories and ways to search. Get creative and you should grab a few bargain domains for your niche.
2. Setup and pay for Domain Hunter Gatherer and use it to find expired domains in your industry. This is faster and you can do cool things like search for dropped links from a website - great for snapping up expired domains that are linked to from local/national media or your local council/government authorities. Again, this requires a Majestic subscription to double check the links plus you really should run everything past Wayback Machine - the Chinese spammers and PBN creators will have often gotten to a domain and trashed it well before you. Just like method one, this takes a little work to do but the possibility of snapping up really good domains is higher.
I would say that sometimes DA, PA et al isn't always the best marker for how good a PBN site could be. Sometimes a perfectly formed small business site with DA20 can be a great purchase - especially if it matches your niche and locality perfectly. I've a strong belief that a perfectly matching website to your niche can really do wonders and trump DA/PA.
Personally, the no1 way of grabbing good domains is to know your industry inside and out. You'll often spot dying companies and possible drops well before other people get to them simply by having some insider knowledge. You'll also be safe in the knowledge that each and every domain you snap up is perfectly aligned to you niche! I've grabbed some amazing sites via this method over the years, including historic government owned websites and the official websites for airports - created back in the 90's before a re-brand in the 2010's. Get to know your niche and be curious about it.
