Advance-fee scams are usually referred to as Nigerian prince email scams, because that's how this type of scam got "famous" some 25 years ago. Here's an example:
It's also known as the 419 scam. The number "419" refers to the section of the Nigerian Criminal Code dealing with fraud, the charges and penalties for offenders.
It exists in many versions these days and still costs a lot to victims, the common thing is that the sender asks for money upfront, just like in OP's case. The basic idea is dating back centuries, it was used with fax and traditional mail too well before the internet existed.
