It's a good trick, I personally follow the latest follower and wait 24 hours to go through the new ones.
Probably works well for big competitors but my competitors are usually way smaller and not gain many followers within hours.

Yes it definitely works, I assume my competitors are simply growing a bit too slowly for me to wait less than 24 hours because they gain maybe around 5 or less per day.

Following followers of other people isnt the best idea. Same as your start except you like their post. And follow the people who like the post after you. That way u will not only get followers but also engaging ones. Works really well

Usually the followers of those large accounts aren't as engaged with your postings as they already follow so many accounts.

Follow suggested users too, Instagram always suggest new users from your niche to you and the follow back on those are crazy i get 50-60% follow back from them.
