Question about making $ from Youtube ads

I have a channel with 1270 subscribers, 306,000 total views and 17000 hours of watch time.

My top videos have 117,000 views, 50,000 views and 30,000 views.

It's about a very niche video game that does have a some players but definitely much smaller than your Fortnights and Counter Strike's. I always assumed the volume was too small to ever make a living out of this thing.

So yesterday I'm watching this video where a guy is complaining that Youtube is a waste of $ and that you won't make a lot of $ doing it. He shows a video with 16,000 views that made him $136.

You don't have to watch it.

Anyway I'm sitting here thinking....... $136 for 16,000 that's pretty fucking good. What's the problem? What is the catch? Even with my very niche not so big video game I could probably figure out how to make videos that get about 10,000 views a day.

It seems too good to be true. Too easy. Heck I could start 3 channels about 3 different video games.

I have no idea how my 117,000 video got that many views. It was so basic so simple. I spent like 2-3 hours making it. I have another video that I spent 2 months making (doing lots of research), that one only has 30,000 views. It's actually what turned me off about the whole thing. If I got paid for that video on view count I would have made less than $1 an hour. Where's the 117,000 video would have made me over $200 an hour. (None of my videos were ever monetized)

So what am I missing. Like I said it seems too good to be true.

Have you applied for YouTube Partnership Program?

Start with that. You have enough views and subscribers. If YT reviews your channel and accepts you then you have answered your own question.

You say you make videos about a niche video game but no details about what your content is.

You may have trouble with YPP if it is just gameplay without a lot of original content or your own voiceover. YT may consider this low value and unoriginal. Or maybe not.

Do you show game hacks or cheats? YT may consider this against their ToS. Or maybe not.

Since you have the numbers, just apply for YPP and see what they say. Maybe you have found a business that really is too good to be true.

So, what is the question?

I wanted to get an opinion from someone whos actually made $ from youtube views. $3 for 1000 views seems like a lot. Too much to be honest. I think I could easily get up to 100,000 views a day if I spent 40 hours a week hustling. Maybe within a 2-3 month timeframe.

I was hoping someone could clue me into what im missing here. What makes this harder than it looks.

Often times you dont realize a method is ultra saturated until youve spent 2 weeks making $1 an hour without any real growth.

Im missing some hours watched. i have more than enough lifetime but they only count last 12 months

honestly if i was to start doing it again it would be for a different game. the one i used to play was very expensice cash grab type game. maybe why its not saturated because of how much $ you need to spend to know the game as well as i did.
