If your website is not likely to change, you can build a static site with Gatsby, and host on Netlify or Gatsby Cloud, both are free with SSL

Can you please give more details? I love the idea of static websites, but what happens here is that while hosting HTML files on Netlify is free (with perks), the CMS, or the backend that creates those HTML files is free but for advanced functionality you the have to pay and price is not that small.

Yes, you're right. The downside is that you cannot use any plugins like Wordpress.
There's tons on open source project out there to help, but require knowledge about programing, specific JS

IMO, I would go static site if:

1. The site is simple, can start using a simple starter
2. The site is hard or huge (required custom build in Wordpress or similar platform)
3. The site is similar to the static I've built
4. Content is not change every hours -> it require build resource

I would go with Wordpress if:

1. There already have a good plugins / straightforward to use

But what about the advanced functionality that you need?

Not like very fancy things, let's say search in site, contact forms maybe (don't send me to Wufoo please), commenting on blog posts (Disqus sucks lately, they put ads in it). Stuff like that. JavaScript itself can't solve these on client side, it has to be server side.

For search, if your site is not very large, you can: prebuilt the index on client site, or use JS to load the db in server side, or use service like Algolia
For things like contact form, comments: you can use Google Firestore Db; which offer a good free tier; Firebase also can be used as static hosting.

People say it will approve you faster than on other platforms, I don't know yet, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm not in it for the AdSense stuff though so... Just post your articles, if they're good, they'll let you in.

Also, if your blog has a TLD (it's own domain name) you don't have to wait for the earnings tab to be enabled. You can simply add the TLD to your sites list, place the code in your blog template and wait for AdSense to review it.

Earlier, I went and applied for AdSense. I put the amp scripts they provide for auto ads and pushed the buttons. I just received an email saying my website is not eligible to show ads. It's mostly because my website is not done yet, I had broken links and ugly pages. However, they were fast to review, if your site looks good you might get AdSense very fast.
