My pet-related website with over 30k page views a month and ads throughout.

I achieved this by using Ezoic Site Speed Accelerator. That's it, nothing else to it. Every website can get this and similar scores by using them.

You have to pay to use it, and change your name servers.... so might not be for everyone.

I think the question everyone is asking is Did you get a real traffic improvement since you started using them?

Difficult to say. I'm always posting content and I switched to a new theme 2 months ago as well as reducing the number of ads displayed on-page. Traffic has increased but I would have expected it to increase anyway.

Directly testing how much page speed impacts ranking would be incredibly difficult to do effectively. You'd need a testbed of identical websites and carry out split testing.
 
It's a shiny number but just a simple score at the end of the day. Focus on the actual speed and not on scores.
 
If you want to score 100 on this, some simple things to do.

Host you're website on your own server, with you're own broadband.

Do not use bloated html pages that come with wordpress plugins.

A single html page with minimal coding, including php will hit the 100 score.
