Hey you guys.
What do you think about the disavow file?

I have heard people at google webmaster forum saying to not use it at all and remove all disavowed domains.

I personally have about 1500+ disavowed URLs on one of my websites (accumulated over the years). And I start to think whether I am being too harsh in judging domains.

What's your criteria and what do you disavow?

Why wouldn’t you use it? In time i get a lot of low quality backlinks and with google being more and more retarded, i like keeping safe, especially with naturally grown websites

There has been a lot of discussion and conspiracy theories about it.
On the one hand you admit you have bad links on the other you disavow them... don't know... in December I deleted the disavow file.

You don’t admit anything.. you see a bad link in webmaster tools and just add It because you disavow It, which means you don’t think It is good enough for your website

I don't touch it. The vast, vast majority of sites have no reason to use this. Most automated links are not negative SEO and don't do anything to your site. It's a waste of time unless you're in a super spammy niche and even then negative SEO only works in certain situations I've not bothered with it even on my bigger sites.

I've done several experiments. Like disavowing every single link a few years ago (worked).

Generally the disavow file is like adding nofollow to links you don't control. That's about it.

Yes I agree with you, and I still use the disavow file, but many Google "top contributors" in the google webmaster forum said to not use it, and that it is a tool exclusively designed to help people who have received penalties.

But I want to share a little strange thing that happened to me about this:

4 or 5 years ago I submitted a blog post on to a few websites and got the backlinks from those (although these sites don't accept guest posts anymore now, but they did back in the days). A few weeks later I saw a decline in my rankings. And in the google webmaster forum they told me that this was because of the backlinks "I built" with the guest post. They told me to disavow those. I disavowed them, and I got back my rankings in no time. Now when looking back at this story, I think this was just a coincidence. And it had nothing to do with the guest post backlinks. So a month ago I removed these backlinks from the disavow and again now saw a drop (which though could have been caused by something else). At the same time I also tried a period of a couple weeks without disavow file and my rankings seemed to improve.

But as you and those who have been in this business long enough know, it is really difficult to pinpoint what is causing what on a short term scale.

So in your disavow which websites do you have?
If it's a small new website in another language linking to you, do you keep it?
if it's a poorly designed website with shit UX but that seems from a honest person, do you keep it?

Me, for years, I disavowed everybody, unless you are a huge blog/website. And this has worked for me. But I always have the doubt if I should let other backlinks be, not disavow them, and that could make the situation even better.

@Joe 10 - i suggest not to use it, unless you get a penalty notice in your google webmaster account

For example, I have 15000 ******** backlinks with money anchor text to a specific money page of mine all coming from spammy viagra/similar pages. How can I not disavow that?

whats done is done. Focus on white hat activities now :)

You dont know what you are talking about.

The 15k backlinks were made by other people trying to damage my business.
This is a common practice that I noticed quite often. People build bad links for you.

What is your criteria to disavow someone (beside extreme cases like the above)?

You are right I don't know the solution of negative SEO :) Google panguine 3.0 disvow bad links itself

It doesn't work as quickly as many people would like

It can take a while to kick in
