The best antivirus is ESET NOD32, but it is fee based. Even then Malarebytes can detect something. If you have Avira + Malwarebytes, you can be sure, you have the best free one solution. If you wanna the top, then ESET NOD32 is the only choice. There is also Malwarebytes Antirootkit soft, which is free one. You can install it also, together with Avira and Malwarebytes. If you like Linux - then Qubes OS would be top choice.

For a long time I have used Avira free version and that's a good choice.

However I have always used malwarebytes, which can detect things Avira would not.

Still searching for a good deal for a legit license, if anyone have some tip please let us all know.

My 12 year old self would've agreed with you as in 2003 there were no good antiviruses except the beast NORTAN. It was a resource hog then and thats why people left it.

I have disabled windows defender, and my main antivirus is Malwarebytes. I got a great deal for a 4 year plan because I’m a student. I can definitely recommend malwarebytes.
