I've found http://newswiretoday.com/ to be extremely useful - they usually approve your press release with an hour and Google News seems to love them for some reason.

It depends.

If the website/product that the press release features is important then it's probably a good idea to submit it to as many sites as possible, as any of them may start ranking good for your keywords at one point and you don't want to miss out on opportunities.

For smaller projects though, I typically only use newswire today, prlog and 1888pressrelease as those three have proven to be most successful (for me, at least), and I can't be bothered with more sites as each submission takes a considerable amount of time.
