lol.. This whole "links need traffic thing". It doesn't even make sense from a search engine standpoint. It always comes from people who have no real experience with pbns, but like to read blog posts.
It's a chicken and egg.
Search engine ranks pages with links from other pages with traffic. What comes first? Traffic can't be a ranking factor because traffic IS the reward from other ranking factors. It's programmatically impossible and it would break the entire algorithm in so many ways. It would create loops of unfair advantage for already ranking sites.
And additionally, traffic is irrelevant. You could have an amazing, super strong, super authoritative site in the scientific domain with research papers.. It won't have much traffic. Traffic is related to relevance/content, not strength. There's absolutely no reason why a site couldn't be super authoritative but have almost no traffic.
If Google made traffic a search ranking factor they would be taking a natural system, the world wide web, and applying their own output from that natural system as a way to measure output. It's nonsensical. Traffic is output. Ranking factors are input.

Blackhat links still work, do they pose a greater risk than whitehat links? Maybe, but that does not mean they cannot be part of a viable business model, even in today's environment.
Getting links 100% naturally is a very slow and at times expensive process, so while you are waiting years for a project to take off the whitehat way, you me be making money off of another project in 6 months with blackhat methods, while spending less.
The truth is that each method has it cons and pros and different risk levels, both can work, which one you choose is just a matter of personal preference and not a right or wrong way argument.

PBNs are not all bad.. It proves helpful when done right. So be cautious while choosing the service provider.

Good luck spending thousands of dollars on high quality news links and long term SEO strategies to get blown out the water by some one armed black hat SEO guy who outranked you with his 1 page shitty site.

I kind of agree with the op. long term projects require long term solutions. Not all projects necessarily need a clean whitehat strategy, but a lot do. Its fine if you use blackhat links, but then treat them like they are and don't complain when your site tanks a year later.
