Read this morning, posting here rather than FB forum cos I think this is a big deal and newsworthy.
Jimmy Wales from Wikipedia is opening up a FB competitor based on Wiki style practices.
Oh shit.
FB is in trouble. Not immediately, but it's happening.
I've been shifting my strategies and client spend away from FB for ...5 years?
Since I pulled my ad spend, my likes and numbers (organic) have gone up. (In some other post I'll talk about organic growth.)
However - without getting on the FB bashing thing, they have a series of weaknesses, some of which I contend are Historical Humankind Species Evolution level.
Said before , I say again, having one single platform for 99% of people to use as social media is as ridiculous as 99% of people being on AOL.com for email.
This is threshold stuff - not incremental. Nothing nothing nothing EVERYTHING is the way of it.
FB and almost all the mainstreamers have left themselves open to destruction.
Mesh/Cellular networks and local broadband, new satellite players etc are opening the bandwidth.
The 'hosts' of the party have turned into parasites - they sell your personal 'everything', in addition to the money they may through their ostensible business of service/adverts.
Humans are a combination of wise moves and complete stupidity.
However, trust is a big deal.
FB/Google/YT etc have started to erode trust big time.
Look at Twitter - canning all political ads was sharp as hell. They regained User Trust.
Wikipedia has, for all its faults, Trust.
FB is starting to look like the pervy weird Uncle at the part who is making the girls uncomfortable.
Also in a political sense, Zuckerberg has hired a lot of ex-Republican Party Apparatchiks to manage the 'political' social media aspects, and they're trying to emulate Rupert Murdoch's power from the 1980's to now. The money is unthinkable, beyond all measure. They cannot give it up. It's Billions and Billions of raw dollars,
And also - From outside the US.
And with Zuckerberg trying to create a Crypto, they're effectively creating a nascent 'Virtual State' with it's own currency.
One thing a wise man said to me years ago during early Internet Gambling stuff - 'Never, ever , mess with the State's revenue.' and by extension, don;t start arrogating powers of the state.Such work is best done in the dark, or subtly.

Facebook isn't smart enough to know when to back-the-fuck-off. Dorsey at Twitter made the smart move. Get out of the game while the state plays or you will get destroyed. When the elephants fight it is the grass that gets trampled
The US 2020 election is an existential one for the Western World, down to an Intelligence community level. These are the actual black hat players.
Dorsey went 'Oh fuck no' and got out. He also bought the user trust back by doing so. Thanks to Trump and this move, I can see a rebound for twitter, which I thought was on the way out.

And now, for all the power (ostensible) and all the money (actual) and political favor FB have curried by hiring in the ex political operatives for megabucks (sweet sweet internet money) FB is precisely vulnerable to catching a common cold - Users depart.
Accounts remain...but ....they don't go there.
Jimmy Wales jumping into the mix is a sign. He sees the vulnerability and he is precisely the right vector for some damage.
Trust matters.
What an amazing time this will be in terms of massive variability. One day, sun rises on an Empire the likes of which the world has not seen.
The next, it's another step left behind as the users climb to the next level.
