On page SEO

Since joining this website recently, I've been reading a lot. There's some fab advice, but it can also become overwhelming (I guess SEO is meant to be difficult, right?).

I've started guest posting slowly for off-page SEO, but not really done much on-page SEO.

Can someone help with the basics on how to get started? From what I've read, do some keyword research on what I can rank for, and start writing for it. Make sure you have SSL, fixed all 404 errors, and more.

What are the 3 main things a newbie can do to help with on-page SEO?

After working with SEO for more than 10 years, I second this. Great summary of everything you need.

Internal links is something that a lot of people tend to forget. The amazing blog post you wrote 3 years ago do need links from new blog posts to be kept "alive".

Relative title & decent description for products. Id also look at what people are searching for and provide some decent information on your page to answer user query OR if its multiple products like 10 gym bags. With feature list based around questions:

Can you wash this bag: Yes

Or create content around stopping a bag from smelling and then list some products which can be cleaned or are the easiest fabrics to maintain.

Create some essential stuff to keep in gym bag posts. Internal link to different size bags.

Id pretty much focus onsite SEO around product / answering questions and writing more than 200 words about a bag.

Nah you can expand on product descriptions by talking about what you can carry, max weight, volume and space etc. Then to get ideas on doing some FAQs just search for gym bags in google, then look at people also asked or also searched for, start clicking and expanding that box for ideas for both products and blog posts.

Books
- The art of SEO
- SEO 2019 by Adam Clarke


Blogs
- backlinko
- Moz blog
. Search Engine Journal

Courses
Lynda.com has some great course on SEO


General tips on page
- Use Schema markup
- Incoporate Keywords at the beginning of titles and meta. Then spread synonyms or related keywords in body of text
- Using numbers in titles help i.e 5 great tips for waxing your legs
- Make sure your code is clean
- Use page speed insights and get pages fast
- Mobile compatible site
- Don't buy backlinks unless you know they will be high quality
- Try not to duplicate your meta
- Make sure your domain is set up correctly with DMARC etc

What about page speed? It's more relevant now than ever.
Make sure your page load fast. 2 seconds is the bare minimum to should aim for.
Also, check that you run just as good on the phone as on the desktop.

Keyword density before you do anything else focus on this, only then move on to other advice given above

indeed keyword density is important, never go above 3%.
Keyword and keyword variation in htags.
Several h2s and some h3s.
Content need to be at least as long as your competitors.
