How long does it take your new content to rank *somewhere* on Google?

One of my sites has what I think is a problem... but want to check with you all first.

To set the stage the domain's been around 4 years or so, and it has a 'blog' component where some buyer's guides are published. SEO site health for the most part is good, the buyer's guides have seen more fluctuation due to Google algo updates (I guess that's normal since they are YMYL-ish...)

I haven't published new stuff too often, maybe one article a month? Lately I'm seeing that new articles get indexed very quickly, within a day. But ranking in SERP is a whole other thing. They don't rank anywhere for my target keyword for days or even weeks (I'm talking keywords with moderate competition and sub 1000 volume).

A year and a half ago when I published more frequently, I remember things would rank much faster than that, within a day or two. At least starting out on page two, and then climbing.

So you folks with somewhat established websites, how long until a new piece of content ranks somewhere?

Damn. Has that changed in recent years? Has Google slowed its roll when deciding to rank newly ranked pages? I could have sworn in past years it was much faster than that.

IMO, if it's not on the top 4, it doesn't really matter. However it should take within half year should you SEO throughout the year.

I've got a site that's showing brand new, fresh articles indexed on Ahrefs in 2-3 days.

Yes, depending on your keyword effectiveness as well, how well you link your website inside and out, including the quality. There are many factors to this.
The reason is you have to build authority to even earn a rank, and that isn't overnight. Besides, you're competing against other authorities, but it doesn't mean you can't outrank them. It takes time. If you do anything blackhat/funny to rank in a few days for instance, it may not survive google updates. I suggest learn more about SEO, and you'll justify how long it may take.

*I meant within half a year to rank within the top 4 pages, but if that niche is unpopular; which is rare, than you have a higher chance to rank sooner.

Established site, adding new content? You can submit the URL to search console and it'll appear immediately in a lot of cases. Leaving it to index depends on your website and the whole host of other factors.

Right, I do that no matter what. Indexing is not the issue, new content is indexed super quickly. I'm more talking about ranking, like, seeing your page on page 2-5. I'm interested in how much time people are observing between new content being indexed, and ranking somewhere.

Apologies, I should have been clearer. When I say “appear immediately”, I mean it can appear page 1-3 immediately if the site is strong and the content is relevant. I’ve added content targeting low SV keywords (<100 p/m) and gone straight to rank #1-3 and stayed there (within 30min of posting an article/page). All depends on the quality of content and the strength of your domain.

I'd love to say Google is my bitch, but I removed Yoast and tried a different plug in which I am testing as part of a case study for our clients.

Are you talking ranking or indexing? OP asked about ranking, I think most new content indexes quickly.

It definitely takes longer to rank nowadays. Some of my content takes a couple of weeks, other content on the same site can take 3 months. I only target easy/medium KW's on established sites.

I just posted a page to a new site (10 months old) targeting KW difficultly 44, though looking at the SERPs it should be classed as fairly easy. Will let you know how it ranks.

Think we are on the same page. Content indexes fast and appears 30-100 within a day (in most cases), but it takes longer to move up to page 1 and crack the top 5. Personally I find this can take a few months without building links, based on KW difficulty, competition and authority of the domain only, no links.

Not sure what plugin you're testing out but I've recently moved from Yoast to RankMath which appears to have most of the Premium Yoast features for free. That being said you're a bit more advanced user than me so may not hit your needs. Worth a look if you haven't heard of it before though. (I have no affiliation just seems a good plugin based on my use so far)
