Cheers BHWers. I first ran across this place many years ago, but I was too scattered at the time to really sink my teeth into the nuggets of wisdom that are stored behind these virtual walls.

I'm an American living in the sub-tropical part of the U.S. (think hurricanes, lots and lots of hurricanes) where our "winter" season lasts from about 4:03 am until 4:07am on January 21 of every year.

I'm a writer.

I'm a domain name investor from the 90s. My biggest sale was in 2012 for the mid $xx,xxx for a brandable 8L.com domain name. I later discovered that an intermediary bought the domain for a Belgian beer company... and I probably could have gotten a lot more money for it... but I was very happy with what I got, enough to buy a new car and to put a down payment on a house.

At one point, I had over 5000 domain names. Now, I'm down to about 200.

I'm here with you lot (ok, I learned that from Simon Cowell on Britain's Got Talent) to learn how to build some of these out.

Thanks to each of you for sharing your sage selves. I plan to absorb as much as I can... and hopefully to pay it forward when I am able.

Wow you are already an expert in your field, but anyways welcome to the BHW .

Welcome welcome, I was in the same boat domaining bought a lot of crap and let it expire. Now I keep my portfolio small but more valuable. Quality over quantity

I'm no expert, but thank you. Really, it was just a combination of timing and luck. I'm glad to be here. I'm learning a ton!

For sure, I can relate! I was fortunate enough to get in on the ground floor, where we didn't have to prepay for the registrations (Network Solutions) and we could flip them before the invoice became due. But, for sure, quality over quantity... especially these days with the abysmal revenues from parking (and thus one of my motivations for development)... which is why I am down to 200 or so.

May i call you domain reseller?:D
Welcome to BHW, buddy.

Haha, sure, but "Lucky" is probably more accurate. Thanks for the welcome, buddy ;)

Welcome, you seem to be more of a domain trader, rather than writer :)

Welcome mate. Do you still actively sell domains? Would you like to share your method with us?

Welcome mate

Thanks mate!

Thank you! Haha, yeah probably, because all of my writing thus far has been non-business (children's books, short stories, etc.). I'm here to change that up a bit. ;)

Thanks! I do, but I've never actively sold them. 95% of them were registered before 2000, so I've always had a buy-and-hold approach. If someone wants to buy one, they find me and if they're willing to pay enough, I will let it go. ;)

The industry has changed significantly since I began, and to be honest, I haven't adapted to it well. In the old days, we could make enough revenue from parking that the buy-and-hold approach was an easy one to maintain. With parking revenues in the gutter now, that approach is no longer a good one.

I've always had the intention of developing some of my domains out, so that's what I am figuring out now. However, many of the players in the domain industry are big into flipping them, and yes, there is a decent income that can be achieved if you know what you're doing.

What's the best method in the domain niche now? Still, a more in-depth guide would be really appreciated by many people on BHW.

For flipping? Or for domain investing in general? I guess I could start an AMA thread, but don't those already exist here on the topic?

I'm interested in whatever works in the domain niche now, be it flipping or investing in general. The most popular question is guaranteed to be "how you did it" thus an in-depth guide would be better as it eliminates these kinds of questions from the start. I've not seen one related to domains here.

Thanks for the suggestion. Ok, I'll give it a go.
