Are any of these numbers quoted (100/200/400 per day) also doing the same amount of unfollows? Obviously this would be double about of actions so worth mentioning.

Or do most people just follow for multiple weeks before unfollowing?

I can assure you that I am unfollowing ~700-800 in one day once a week, and never had any problems.
