Focus on getting keywords that you can easily rank for. However, also include keywords with high competition so you can be sure that you'll get enough traffic for your blog. Then do on-page SEO and then focus in building quality links from guest posting, bookmarking, blog commenting and forums

Since your new to seo, I suggest you should target long tail low-competition keywords. If you don't have your own personal database of links at the moment, try and purchase scrapebox and scrape as many links as you can. There are footprints and keywords list you can scrape with if you look around the forum and search google.
