I think it is becoming more apparent that on-site optimization is becoming more and more important as google releases updates...

one thing that I have found is a good place to learn is by looking at the most difficult blackhat niches to figure things out.

for example: DUI Lawyer New York, SEO Los Angeles ....

what other suggestions you guys have? looking at things like "best mattress" does not help, because you are dealing with high authority domains like CNET, which pretty much trump any on-site optimization other sites do....

Generally I find that adult sites and "illegal" pharma sites tend to be the most blackhat possible. Also, counterfeiting is everywhere.
I own a big forum and so far, these are the 3 topics/threads that by far, are the ones that have tried to spam the most in various ways.

Yea pharma is tough. You have to resort to seo and blackhat methods because no one will let you advertise. Casino cpa can be too due to the selling of fake methods. See the immoral method thread for example.

Casino also takes place in that category for sure

thanks all - greatly helps with reverse engineering exercise

WTF

number 1 ranked casino website: https://www.777.com/ has no H1 tag!!! and is using keyword meta tag! so much for reverse engineering exercise : - )

one thing that is jumping out: almost all the number 1 ranked sites in most of the niches that I am looking at right now has the length of their title and description fixed so that it shows completely in the google search result. description is around 120 characters. confirms what I have read here: https://blog.spotibo.com/meta-description-length/

You’re overstating the value of content. The replica/nfl jerseys guys are using a lot of straight duplicate content and mass spam links to rank.

NFL jsersys in particular, if you can manage to bypass their cloak (there are ways) you’ll see a lot of it is straight ripped from Yahoo/Twitter etc, doesn’t pass Copyscape.

Links are still without a doubt the most important aspect. It’s just G**gle has gotten exponentially better at determining what links should move rank.

That said, NFL jerseys you’ll see them using mass spam. The way they get away with this is by using custom CMS that aren’t in the disavow ML database. They have huge teams of coders finding these CMS... and make hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of sites, maybe only 10% succeed, but they still cash in big.

TL;DR - Yes content is important, but there’s no question that links are still absolutely the most important part of ranking. The trick is finding/obtaining the right links for your particular market.

"The trick is finding/obtaining the right links for your particular market." - Therein lies the difficulty...
