There are number of ways you can use Ahref in. You can use to first analyze your website for SEO flaws and then fix those issues. If you are struggling on On-Page front then make some On-page fixes. If you are lacking in number of backlinks then shortlist 5-10 competitors and then check their backlinks. Download the list of all backlinks and start making backlinks on those websites. This is called reverse engineering in SEO.

although actually I would use Moz to search for your keywords I think, KD is broken AF on ahrefs but it has some other great methods for searching for great pages to build

I suggest NOT to believe Ahrefs keyword difficulties score. You should check manually. Are your competitors authority brands, good on-page or good backlinks...?
I suggest follow the weak method. That means if a weak can rank a keyword so you can do it too.

You need to ask yourself this questions first. What's the reason why I bought Ahrefs? is it to spy on my competitors back links? Is it to check what keywords that are ranking for any website? Is it to check strong backlinks from drop/expired domains to make PBNs? Is it to show off and post it on BHW that you bought Ahrefs? Jk. Next is to search how to rank your website on page 1 and earn lots of monies!
