DISCLAIMER: I don't say that it will work in 100% of situations (you know, it is an SEO), I just analyzed and compared 50 websites, found boundaries and tends. I don't pretend to be an SEO guru, I share what I've noticed.

Important: I don't consider on-page factors, only backlink profiles.

I analyzed backlink profiles of 50 websites that rank well in very competitive "educational" niche, all of them started building links 3 or less years ago.
Methods they were using:
- Forum or blog comments/profile links (from too spammy to not-so-spammy);
- Paid guest blogs;
- Free guest blogs;
- Hacking;
- Side-bar, footer, header links;

I split them into three categories regarding methods they have been using:
- White-hatters (Only guest blogs);
- Gray-hatters (mix of forum/profile links + guest posts);
- Black-hatters (let's hack the internet);

Black-hatters:
I was expecting that hacking methods shouldn't work (I'm too naive) but websites that generated 2000 ref.domains with 200,000 of links in one month got top10 positions pretty quickly. I don't know what will happen after, but at this moment they rank high with a backlink profile that consists of hacked websites on spanish, belgium, polish, etc. domains.

Gray-hatters:
Most of them were posting links on spammed-to-death forums, some of links were "unique", but in general links were placed on forums that everybody aware of as a place where you can instantly put a link. Also, they have some guest post links, but not too much. One website has ONLY side-bar links on landing pages, and it didn't work well for its positions.

Their positions are lower, than blackhatters have and very unstable. I can say, that this backlink profile isn't powerful.

White-hatters:
This is a win-win scenario, really. A few websites started guest blogging and have been getting links in amount of 30-60 per month. They were posting their backlinks in articles on reputable websites. Many of them were free, the most expensive was $350 (as far as I know). Links were placed in relevant articles and only in the body of the article (no links in bio). And they rank so fucking high on every commercial keyword.

In short:
1) forum/profile links won't work well without guest posts
2) guest posts are cool
3) hacking is ok, but be afraid of getting penalized

conclusion: I'm kind of busy, so I didn't explained every detail, but if you have questions I'd be happy to share what I know

p.s. native english speakers, forgive me please, I do my best.

Good analysis. Boys are balling with hacked links these days. The smart ones mix them up with guest posting to make their link profiles look legit.

Great information but we can do blog comments & profile creation with low spam

You can do, but (according to my research) it won't work well

Those blackhatters don't hack comment sections, they hack landing pages and those links send more juice than links from comment sections

You mean that they simply go to pages without much security and just change their source code into d0follow links?

They do not only change a link's attribute. They change the content on the landing page. Usually, they wipe out everything and publish a relevant article with links in it.

Do you know how they are doing this and why website owners don't change their pages to original state?

Those are abandon websites

And I don't know how to hack

Very nice share, thanks! What do you mean with "free guest blogging"? You mean articles on web20 etc or they posted their articles on sites that are searching for guest posts and you can leave a link to your site there in exchange?

Thx

free guest posting is when you contact an editor of the blog, propose topics, he (she) accepts your topic, you write an article with your link in the body of the article, an editor reviews your article and publishes it on the blog.

1. DO F0llow niche Related (Forums and Community sites related to your niche)
2. Profile Links High DA With A Specific profile somehow related to your business or project
3. Social Engagement
4. Guest Posts
5. Subdomain Blog Creations

Oh, it's pretty easy. You should learn JavaScript, PHP, SQL, spend a thousand hours on practicing and than you can hack every abandoned website

lol wish it was that easy.
tbh you should be well familiarised with running exploits and rooting servers once shell is there.

Guest posting, the best way to go if you have budget ( few k per month or more ) and writers to help you with this strategy. Hacked links you can find anywhere even on BHW, all SAPE links are hacked sites in most cases. And if you want to get links from websites that are not part of sape network and not spammy but also hacked, well then.. you got to look on different forums where you can purchase hacked ftp's, root or whm access very cheap but have in mind that is illegal !
