Gonna start a pet adoption site.

I was browsing through imgur today and saw this post.

I'm a pet person and I feel the same way about websites. Everyone should have one.

Really got me thinking. There should be a site for pet adoption of those old, unwanted pets.

So, I just bought the domain. I'll show updates when I'm done as I don't want any keyboard warriors trying to buy backlinks or seo for the domain when it is not needed and may harm the site. You should never share your money site here btw. I have seen people who troll like that or just to jump competition.

Not really looking to make profit. Maybe some AA to pay the monthly server costs but nothing other than that. maybe like a pet adoption kit and have AA links to support the site.

My main goal, by september, is to have a basic site down for a few states and to have it so users can filter by state and type of pet and age. This will take some SQL and PHP but should be able to be done.

Then I'll be reaching out to no-kill shelters like ASPCA and getting information or setting up accounts for them to list the older unwanted pets.

After that, I'll be getting attention from imgur and reddit to get people to get those pets adopted. every pet deserves a good home

If anyone has some backend coding skills like skills with DB management or laravel let me know and we can collab.

We even got the app up and running.It is not really an adoption site but we planned something of the sort.

Looks great! thanks for sharing? I wonder if the liabilities of caring for other people's pets was the breaker

I like it. That's the kind of project I like to see. Not that it's animals, specifically (don't tell my 10 year old cat I said that), but that it's a project that stems from something you're passionate about, and has a broad scope, with programming involved. I don't do php and I'm not very available, anyway. But this is the kind of thing I'll be following.

Not sure if I can help you in anyway, but hats off for your initiative. We have stray dogs here in India, and I and my wife try doing everything we can to help those poor animals. Nice to see bhw members doing something for them. Kudos, and best of luck man!

i saw the picture this morning as well. sounds like you got a good plan using imgur and reddit. it could end up being a bit of work getting setup for multiple (or all) states. my initial idea would be to email/contact these places and ask them to send info on their oldest animals and animals that have been there the longest. the other way is scraping the sites and creating some filters to narrow down the selection.

as for money, many adoption places and shelters sell overpriced merch essentially to help cover some costs. adopters would love to sport a shirt or hoodie with your brand on it and you can be upfront saying proceeds help keep the site running.

edit: just reread the part where you say you want them to possibly create an account to post themselves which is probably a better idea but i fear a lot of them wouldnt “convert on your offer”

Great idea on the merch and stuff. Im just trying to figure out how to incentivize the shelters in more monetary ways. I know they make a lot of the fee money and I do not want to cut into that.

As for making the sites, I will have an interactive map that runs with javascript and jQuery to make a clickable map and then it will just be by location within x miles of zip code.

I really want to stress that I am focusing on getting those unwanted pets(broken legs, no tail, returned back to the shelter). It is almost like a prison for them in the small cages and you don't get out unless you are the 11/10 pet. I think that is bullshit and there are many more people who will take those furballs.

I will probably head to crowdsourcing such as having a landing page for shelters to contact to be listed. The incentives are that more pets will be given. That brings them more revenue and gets those pets to those forever homes to live out the rest of their lives and that is my main goal.

This is not concrete but I am thinking about doing a 2.99 listing fee once a pet is sold for pets 0-9 years and 50% going to charity and making the 10+ years free.

Here's my two cents and personal experience. We knew a lady who ran a pet rescue that was nation wide. Setting up flights of dogs and cats from kill shelters to no-kill areas, fosters, etc. Got my puppy because of her, rescued her from a high kill shelter in Texas (and I'm in Los Angeles, CA). There was no charge for her services, she got a lot of funding and donations from pet food companies, pet supply stores (PetCo, PetSmart, etc.) and other related industries. She also routinely ran donation raffles (the charity was a 501c3) with product she got from the pet food companies for that purpose.

If you're in the states, I recommend looking into becoming a 501c3 charity, which is all but required for companies to donate goods or money to you. I don't donate money to anything that isn't a 501c3 and on Guidestar.org so I can review the financials. As a charity, you'll also have better opportunities for grants as well.

I was looking earlier about that but I do want to at some point be able to accept non-taxable donations but I do intend to use AA so It will be hard to report that is non-taxable income.
I will probably use coinpayments along with stripe to accept donations. And I will not need money for grants as what I will be doing is a simple directory site. Building that link to those pets.

We got liability insurace for that and signed consent from the users. It was the only way.

What a great project, I know of a few charities here doing the same, rescuing animals I adopted my first cat from a family who were not allowed to have pets in their apartment. Really hope it takes off hats off to you OP
