Should I block these potential Ghost followers?

When I start to clean an account from ghost followers I first schedule a DM to everyone of them in Jarvee auto DM, once I got a reply to my msg I increased my % rate. Than you can decide to block them or not.

I don't know, IT did not fix my engagement when I tried once and i ended up loosing 10k followers for nothing.

Exactly, this is what I've seen too, but people keep preaching about ghost removals as something that sounds logical, but hasn't been proven to work.

block and unblock business accounts and engage with rest.

Also, I have an account that is 5 years old and I still get 10-40% engagement. You just need to know who to remove and who not to.

Did you use an app for that? Maybe IG didn't like your use of the app (just like it doesn't like bots) and the advantage you got from getting rid of ghost followers was weighed by the minus points you got for using a kind of bot software...

From what I read it must be done by hand for it to work - so it's a long term project that would go on over months.

I still have to research if blocking so many people could impact your account also - even if you unblock them right away. The block removes the follow, and then you unblock them so you don't have a ten mile long list of blocked accounts.

I've seen accounts that have removed "ghosts" and their engagement % has gone up (after all, it's math), but I haven't seen any provide proof that their follower growth has also increased. At the end of the day, that is important. What do I care if my engagement rate % is higher and my new follower growth is not proportionately increasing?

The most obvious ones would be private profiles without profile photos. I would not remove people who don't post. They may be dead or they may be like everyone else and rarely post.

more engagement = more chance to rank on top hashtags. IF you notice sometimes you will see small accounts on huge hashtags for a split second. They also have amazing engagment.

Although does the engagement really go up or does it just go up because there is less followers? So far it seems like it helps if you only remove obviously spam pages.

Yes! But you can remove them manually!
I removed about 3K non-active & ghost followers in just 2 days manually and now my posts are ranking on explore!

I have researched the ghost follower thing and decided to use my time for better things: targeting the right audience, choosing the right hashtags, and delivering great content.

As I have 14k+ followers, this would be too much work. And IG will know that accounts, after several years, accumulate inactive accounts who followed you and then stopped going on to IG or started a new account.

The worry of many is that IG shows your post first to a group of your followers.If they don't reply, then your post sinks.

I think this worry is unfounded. IG usually shows your post to those you have been in contact with. So it's unlikely that it pulls a test sample of people who haven't logged in for a long time. More likely, the test sample will be pulled from those accounts who are likely to be right for it.

Also, IG tries to punish for cheating. But amassing some defunct followers is part of the game and unavoidable.

I think it is more important to develop the active part of your audience than to remove the inactive one.


I can't do everything, so for now the ghost followers are allowed to haunt.

No disrespect , but are you 100% sure? because I had 49,000 followers and I am deleting thousands of private accounts


I used to have 10k followers and used to have like 5,000 likes per post . I used to rank in the biggest hashtags and now I am suffering with 2-4k likes and it is getting worser and worser . My content is not a problem because I am #1 in my niche and I strongly believe my engagement has gone down because of the ghost followers .

To think that IG shows your post only to a favorable sample of followers that have been frequently engaging with your content is wishful thinking at best.

Go to your followers list. Then type "a" in search followers and all the followers whose name start with "a" will be shown. Visit each and every profile. If they're following a lot of accounts (>2K) then remove them straight away, because they won't be consuming your content.
Repeat same till "z".
I know it's a hell lot of work but what needs to be done, must be done.

No! Don't do this! This approach won't do aby good!
Get rid of those ghost followers ASAP, that's what will be beneficial in the long run otherwise you will stay stuck. No other way!

Another suggestion: You can leave this account idle and start a new account and try to maintain good engagement in that one!

Exactly! Algo doesn't care if your followers are active or not. It's your job to make them so addictive to your content that they keep coming back for more!
Algo shows your post to 10% of your audience randomly, then if they engage it will be shown to 50% and then rest. Usually, most of the post don't even cross 20% because everyone doesn't engage. Engagement is everything.

I have checked on whom to remove:

1. Accounts that follow more than 2000 accounts (your advice)

2. Accounts that have names like hdhdhdh45_34 (fake accounts - no idea where they came from - I never bought followers)

3. accounts that follow way more people than follow them.

4. accounts without profile picture

I'm not sure about accounts with very few posts - maybe it's a good idea to delete all that have fewer than 9 posts as well?
