Say I have a domain and it is linked to a controversial website and so people or authorities get involved, will the domain registrar rat you out and give away your information to the authorities or might just shut down the domain and that's where it ends?

It depends how bad the website is. If you are teaching kids how to blow themselves up along with their schoolmates.. well there is no registrar or fake personas that would save your ass.

Just don't do illegal pages. Of course, they will give all of your details to the authorities. Why wouldn't they? They would not risk their whole business just to cover for you...

The website itself does not promote any illegal activity, but its content might be controversial and the site might have problematic users. If a domain registrar and the authorities or figures are in different countries, would the domain registrars still give away information to say foreign authorities?

If you're worried about authorities being involved, it's most likely illegal. If you're 100% sure it's not, I can see a registrar like Godaddy shutting you down with enough pressure. A shady registrar in China probably wouldn't care.
