I understand i need to do both, but i feel like I need really strongly focus on one.

I have two websites:

First has 30 articles and weaker links - not ranking at all.

Second has only 5 articles and little better links - it ranks on second page, not bad for start.

So the better choice would be to focus more on links right? I can have 200 articles but they wont rank without links. One article with many links is more likely to rank than 200 articles without links.

Links are the hard part though...

Links will make sure that you show up in the first page when the search matches your keywords
Content makes sure that you have defined your keywords, enough times, in a non-stuffing way , in informative articles that are not too short.
We're at the point where we have very good links but we are only ranking for very few keywords because we haven't worked on the content...so I'm furiously creating content right now....Nowhere near as much fun as doing backlinks but it has to be done.

You want to go from second page... To first three results. Work on the second site. Add a couple of articles and a couple of links. It will rank. Then link from second to first site.

one thing to note: having lots of blog posts might be negative in overall ranking of the domain. some of your blog posts might come across as thin content by google or google says they are low quality; hence lowering your sites overall quality level.

having a large number of blog posts DOES NOT equal to higher ranking
having quality posts DOES equal to higher ranking

with that said, I would pick the second site that you mentioned (the one with fewer posts and better links).

make quality pages with laser focused on-page optimization for group of similar keywords that share the same customer intention.

someone said linking is more interesting than writing.are you sure? both things seem pretty tedious to me

my articles are absolutely high quality my friend. i have only 5 of them though on the better linked website.

I probably should write till i have 20-30 HQ articles, each targeting a kw, and then link everything

theres alot of information like "build topical relevance with related, inner articles" ffs lol i never got higher ranking from creating more related articles

though they would be very useful if they actually rank because they will hook reader for longer.

but to make them rank i need links... probably way stronger links than i can get

it's a combination of both, backlink matter and the content makes sure that you are shown up on the right keywords as the density must be done in a correct way.

Its not like that if you are focusing more on the content, I mean quality content which is actually what the users want then it will take time to rank but after you are ranked noone will be able to derank you easily. Take a look at the videos of IncomeSchool guys they do the same.

Its simple: Focus on both, divide time equally.

they do what exactly? i know HQ content is a must have but without solid links, schopenhauer and best writers in the world would be nowhere to be found online

They do not build links just Great content and youtube videos around that topic linking back to the articles thats it.
And most of their websites are public and do really well. But it takes like 7-12 months to rank such sites and we arent that impatient.

it depends of the niche you are trying to rank in, sometimes you don't need too much backlinks and you can have a good SEO rank with 20-30 backlinks

Good quality backlinks from high DA sites helps. Content will help you rank for multiple key words, so (like you said) you need both. I have a ton of links, many 70+DA and my rank got up there but I didn't have traffic. Focused on more quality and unique articles that answered frequently enough asked questions and am ranking fairly well on those (some top 3) and getting a decent share of traffic from that. Went through my blogs last month (over 200 of them) and weeded out a bunch of them. Second time doing that. Now with MUCH lower quantity, but much higher quality although content is mostly duplicated. Not targeting traffic with the dup'd content though. Just helps to define the site's content niche for the auto crawlers like hrefs.

can anyone suggest the best seller to buy backlinks from? which stays for long.

If you want links that last a long time do not buy cheap PBN posts. The sellers usually end up letting the domains go after a year or 2.

A good mix of both. However, as said before, quality is the most important over quantity.

think you have answered your own question if the 2nd site ranks 2nd page and has not as strong content but better links that is where to focus
