It's difficult, but not impossible. One method, if you don't want to buy any software, is to review the top ten and see whether they all have the keyword in the title. If they do, then a lot of people are working on the keyword, so it's competitive. If they don't, then not a lot of people are working on the keyword. You can then rank for it easier

Instead of looking for low competition keywords, I suggest you start searching for low-competition niches.

Type some long query into google and wait for it to auto complete.

Use Google keyword planner and extract the keywords. Then check each and everyone's competition. If the top 10 sites having low PA, DA and low quality backlinks, then choose it.
For example:

For example: Imagine that you own a eshop with clothes and you want to add new keywords because your goal is go up in rank on Google. For begin you will probably choose words like dresses, T-shirts, jeans etc... But nothing happend. You are still on second page in google. So than you try words like black checked dresses, white slim-fit T-shirts or blue jeans with torn knees etc...And in few week a magic happend. You are on first page and maybe between first links in organic search. It is true that theese keywords havent got high monthly research but competition is low and is more probably when someone come on your website through this link will make a conversion. So dont stop to searching, combine etc.

Yes. Extracting keywords is bit hard, but possible. Find deep niche and search low competition whether you looking for Amazon affiliate or Adsense or cpa.
