Hello guys, recently I posted a thread on a psychology study that I have done, and I see that people are interested. So I wanted to contribute by giving you notes from my research that I make from time to time.
I will make these threads short as much as possible and I will focus on being direct and concise with the information that I provide.
So in this thread I will give a few facts about the concious and subconcious mind, as well as why its benefitial to know these things and how you can use this knowledge to make better decisions, reduce stress and open up a path for your imagination to flow whenever you need it.
*Important* The information that I provide is my own experience and understanding. I have read a lot from other world known psychologists, but I found that the subject can be understood from various points of views. If you take time to research from different sources you will see that everything has the same point but its expressed in different ways.
So without further a do, lets begin:
THE CONCIOUS MIND: the concious mind is what you are experiencing whenever you are awake. It is what converts all the information that you receive from both the inside and outside of your body.
The information is converted in this way: stimulation/input -> nerve receptors -> subconcious mind -> conversion/processing -> output -> concious mind
*Some information we process without nerve receptors, but the path of processing is still the same.
Now that we know how we process information, its crucial to understand where the information that we get can come from:
1) Time: The concious mind can percieve the past, present and future. (unlike the subconcious but more words about that in the next part). We can sense emotions, some might recall pain, excitement, humor, happiness etc. while thinking about the past (information that had been already proccessed). We can create all these emotions and feelings while thinking about the future (these informations are created, they have not been received trough the nerve receptors but your brain processeses it like it has, thus creating same feelings) and we can witness them and feel them now (its the present where you generate 'organic' feelings.
What I mean by organic is: all the information that you receive are processed with the help of nerve receptors, whilist the unorganic feelings would be those that were generated by your own will.
What does this mean? It means that you can create certain feelings and emotions thus creating a destinctive perception about something (situation, person etc.)
2) Living organisms: There is an interesting thing that happens to all of us when we meet someone, see someone, or even just think about someone. We all get an instant feeling, general feeling. It's either happiness, sadness, anger, love etc. And you may think why is that? (This will be included in the subconcious part as well)
Humans: When we get to meet someone, our subconcious creates the general feeling, but its the concious mind that makes the subconcious generate the perception in the way it does. When we are analyzing someone, the first things we search for are the negative traits, the warnings, the bad sides. Now this is all normal, to first find the bad in someone. Why? You may ask. Our carnal mind, or rather our survival instinct wants to make it clear that the person we are meeting is harmless to us. We don't want to be around people that can do us harm. (Same applies to animals). That's why we tend to look for scars, muscle tone, teeth, weapons, eyes (The eyes chico, they never lie)... Now all of these things that I have listed are mostly checked by the subconcious and not the concious, but I need to list this out because as soon as your subconcious mind gives you an alert, your concious mind has an obligation to respond to it. When the general feeling of the persons presence is established, people tend mostly to ignore it so sometimes you can get hurt by someone that you have trusted but in the end you always tell yourself that you had the feeling. That's why I learned to listen to my gut feeling. (and sometimes it can be a false alarm, but you only need logic to evaluate situations like these, easy peasy, lol)
Animals: You know how you get all fuzzy when you get to a cute puppy? Well the thing is your mind has an embedded system of perception for the young ones. We know that they are not capable of harming us, and they have no knowledge so we tend to teach them (which boosts our feelings towards them, our relationship gets stronger as we teach others). Same is if you see an animal that has sharp teeth, if it, lets say, shows the teeth our automatic response is fear.
3) The non-living(Objects, nature(rocks etc.)): Welcome to the beautiful world of curiosity. Our curiosity is what got us here and makes us evolve further every day.
So why is curiosity so powerful? It fuses the concious and subconcious mind for a short period of time, where they work together as a team to figure out a non existing solution to a problem that has been perceived. The problem (and you guys are smart and know this) doesn't have to be dangerous one, it could be a problem like how to fix the oven.
So how what is the relation between these two when working together? The concious mind explores the problem. It gives all the details to the subconcious mind to understand what it is. Eg. when you hurt your knee, you will look with your eyes to see how big the wound is, how much bleeding there is, if the wound is dirty or not. Then you will maybe touch around to see if the bone is broken, if the around area hurts more its a bigger problem etc. And so your subconcious creates options for you to solve this problem: You can visit a doctor, you can put a bandage, you can wash it up and leave it as it is...
So the process is this:
Aware of the problem/object -> analyzing details -> sending information to the subconcious -> processing -> generating solutions
Curiosity triggers the subconcious minds mechanism of creativity and it empowers it to find a solution as fast as possible. Sometimes you will get a blockage while thinking too hard, but its best to leave those thoughts or rather throw them away as your subconcious will find a solution on its own and hand it to you as soon as possible. (This has relation to the "AHA" moment).
4) Receptors: Your nerve receptors receive stimuli from either the inside or outside environment. Whether you sense pain, touch, cold, warm etc. its just an interpreted information. Now this is a subconcious minds job to make you feel these things, but the concious mind is what gives you the ability to think about it.
Now, its important to understand that the concious mind is NOT the one that generates conclusions, solutions or possibilities, but it does have the power to choose which are best.
The benfits of understanding the concious mind is that you can use it as a path chooser or life manager. You can enhance your awareness of yourself, your surroundings and even other people. It is also good to learn how to connect the concious with the subconcious because it is how you can create non-existant ideas and solutions.
All of this will be much clearer when we finish the next chapter.
THE SUBCONCIOUS MIND: By now you understand that the subconcious mind is the underground software that operates on everything. It is what processes the information given, it is what generates the emotions, feelings, it is what makes us react in certain ways, it is what creates perceptions, it is what manages everything. I could write a lot on this but I will give you some key facts that helped me and some people I worked with to change their lives.
Fact #1: The subconcious only understands the present time. It can not understand the past or the future.
Why? Because it processes information in the very own time it has been received.
Every situation that you recall, or think about, or imagine whatever, is perceived as present. It's happening right now. So here is a handy tip to manipulate your mind - Think of everything as you want it to be and it must be now. Tell yourself its happening now. (I will combine this with habits later on, so it will probably make more sense then)
Fact #2: The subconcious does not understand the words NO and NOT. Lets say you say: " I don't like avocados". Your mind understands it as I LIKE AVOCADOS.
Why? Well I don't have an explanation for this one but as I have researched and had some personal experience as well as some other people too, I found out that this is true.
There are a lot of stories that you probably have heard of as well, like someone was always saying I don't want to fail this test, and they actually do (I had this experience as well as a lot of people I know). I saw a situation with this example where I had 2 friends, Friend1 always said they Are Not Gonna Fail, and Friend2 Always said They Are Gonna Succeed. Friend1 was a study hard type that always got good grades, but usually he would fail all his tests before he would fix them. Friend2, on the other hand, had always passed his tests with minimal study investments.
So if you guys use any confirmations every so often, try to avoid the No and Not.
If you look at it with logic, when you tell yourself I am not gonna fail, you are thinking about failure, thus preparing your mind for it. But if you tell yourself you are gonna win/ahieve, you are preparing yourself for exactly that!
Fact #3: Habits. This is a subject that is discussed so often, even the life gurus, the wealth gurus and other like such tend to talk about this. The wealth habits, the millionaire habits, the this habits, the that habits.
So why are habits so interesting? Well first of all, you have to understand that a habit is made for the purpose of its usage. You create a habit to harvest from it.
Habits are created easily and fast or hardly and struggling, depending if its something you want or not. All in all, habits are created by repetition of an action. Constant repetition. I mean EVERY DAY REPETITION. You can see that everything we do daily is a habit. Even the things we say are mostly out of habit. All of us have that one word that we say every so often. (In my case its brother in my language).
Why are habits good/bad? You can create habits that benefit you and you can create habits that will suck your soul out without you even knowing it.
The good habits are hard to create because we are aware of them. We know that we must create them so we can benefit, but because we are aware it becomes very hard. It's a pain to think about it every day. You know you will forget, you know you will do something instead, and that's why it is hard.
Bad habits are easy to achieve, because they are usually something that pleases us but give bad side effects. Example cigarettes. Nicotine wakens the reward mechanism and therefore you want to be pleased. Why are they easier to achieve tho? Because we want to do them, and we don't think about it. That's it. You just forget about the stress because you tell yourself, its not gonna last forever and its just for a short time. But it never is.
So the difference between achieving bad and good habits is that you think about the good ones and stress about them unlike the bad ones that you don't even care about. Which creates a mental wall that blocks you from doing things.
Now here is a fusion of fact #1 and fact #3: Creating a habit of thinking about something that you want: You will think often trough out the day of your goal, Eg. I want a yacht. So every day I tell myself I have a yacht. Not I want, not I will get, not I would like, but I HAVE. Why this? Because I am giving information that I have it even tho it's not true at all. What does this do? It gives the subconcious mind a problem. You are convincing it that you have something, but it only gets information about it when you tell it. It gets 0 information from other senses, receptors. So now your brain needs to find a way to feel it in whole. You will subconciously start doing things to get that what you desire. There is no telling how long this journey will last, but for what I know, it always works. To make this a habit you need to repeat at least for a month. It's a long time, but it works well.
There is a lot to say about habits, and I don't think telling more would be good for this thread as it's not the purpose. If you want more on this subject, leave a comment I would be happy to make a thread only about habits.
Fact #4: Your emotions have a huge impact on your subconcious. There are various hormones that create certain emotions and they are all driving your subconcious into creating perception. Learn about hormones and you can manage your own functionality in stressful situations.
Here is a nice trick I learned: If you raise your hands with fists up in the air, and hold it for 2 minutes, you increase your testosterone levels and decrease cortizol levels.
What does this do? The testosterone levels get a bit up higher and this creates a sense of selfconfidence, and the cortizol levels drop so your stress reduces.
The practice I wrote is same as when a sports player wins and raises his hands up in celebration.
So how does this work? It's a instinctive reaction to a situation that happens when you feel empowered. This is built in your brain and whenever you do this you will level out those hormones.
Go ahead and try this for 2 minutes, as times flows, you will sense that you feel more powerful. Not like hulk lol but you will feel it, just try it.
Fact #5: Overdrive! Now we all know that our brains have similar traits as modern computers, but one difference is that when a computer goes to overdrive, it probably burns or dies out. As where for the brain, it can create magnificent stuff. When you overwhelm your brain with information on a problem it gives a signal to the subconcious mind that it is very urgent and important to resolve that particular problem. Now, this is not healthy to do, as it may have some side effects such as, stress, nervous behavior, mental issues, depression etc. So my suggestion is that you don't do this.
But the strange thing is that you can benefit from this! Yes, it's true. When you put your brain in overdrive, there is a possibility that it creates such an unique solution that we tend to call "original".
These solutions are highly effective and their usage is very good, but like I said, it could be dangerous!
So that's all I have for you today. There is many more facts, and subjects to be discussed, but learning comes by taking small steps.
By the way guys, I would like to hear if you like this and if you think that I could make an eBook on this? That would be helpful as I could potentially make an earning of off this
Much love and peace!
