[YouTube] Football compilations? Is it legal and can I monetize this kind of channel

I did that for awhile, I never had trouble with compilations. I did get some highlight videos or game footage taken down at the leagues request a couple times. Never had account suspended though.
Was it a monetized channel and you faced issues in that?
Requires careful editing and a bit of luck too. A lot of the time you'll notice they upload on multiple channels incase one is taken down, and also they don't show clips for more than 7 seconds as that increases the risk of copyright detection. It's very saturated which means you are at higher risk of being striked if you're a small channel, but if you're willing to learn the tricks then you can do pretty well so good luck.
You'll also notice they play a lot of NCS/house music which is also to help prevent detection.

Not OP,
How do they even create these videos? for example Messi's best dribbles of the season. Do they re-watch every match he played in the season so something like 50 matches, and cut out that 7 second clip and repeat the process for every match of those 50? Or there's an easier way?

There's a website that uploads full matches where they seem to download it from, and most of these Youtubers watch these players on live streams so when they see amazing moments they pay closer attention and just note the times they took place in the match.
Some are lazy and just re-use clips and add their own mix, and some re-use their own clips for a different topic. For example, say Messi did a nutmeg to a goalkeeper you could use the same clip in two videos ("Messi's greatest skills 2019 compilation" and "Messi owning goalkeepers 2019 compilation" etc.).
I think it takes some time to edit, but not as much as it should do. They must have some secret community where they share clips and editing tricks together.
Youtube is cracking down though, and the Bundesliga in particular make it very difficult to upload Bundesliga videos as they have their own channel and don't want to compete with such Youtubers.

These could easily get taken down. Guessing the video is quality content so the copyright owner did not take it down and they saw views. Also it started getting many views, in some way benefiting the footage owner. I already posted this, but to get possibly get past copyright create reaction videos or voice overs or a critique of the soccer videos. Try to blend your content but still have some of the soccer video in it. Also depends what country you are in.

It was monetized but a always let the video alone for about 3-4 days before monetized. It never took them longer then about 24-48 hours to request it be removed. I dont have a lot of experience in this they were just my results.
So the topic is from 2019. I had one football channel on YouTube but I gave up (not to much views) and I am curious is anybody still makes money on "Football Compilations"? I see that many "Football Compilations" channels on YT were blocked but maybe it can be still profitable (in 2026), maybe the methods should be changed. I don't know. What do you think and know about it?
