Etsy vs Shopify (Startup)

Which do you guys prefer?

I like etsy because their promoted listings are pretty cheap and they already have targetted traffic of people wanting to buy products.

On the other hand shopify you build a brand more fluently but you will have to market it through social media or other tactics which sometimes is hard to find the right audience.

If you had $100 a month in marketting budget which one would you prefer to be on?

I'm going to have to agree with james on this one. Your best bet is ebay in my opinion. Etsy is a hit or miss to be honest... and as far as shopify goes you're going to need more than $100 to drive traffic to your store.

If your budget for promotion is just 100 usd a month it is not enough to build a brand on shopify. So etsy would be the best choice for you.
I've read some blogs saying that the best budget to atleast start and maintain a shopify store is ranging from 700 to 1000 usd. I dunno if it is really true but most i read and watch on YT says it all.

Etsy is a very specific audience. But etsy can be profitable if you find right product. Shopify allow you to set up your own store on own terms and create a brand. Do both. Plenty of free ways to promote if you do not have large budget.

This was the question I was going to ask. But as others have pointed out with a low budget of $100 Etsy is great because you can control the spend pretty easily and get clicks cheap.

I use Shopify, it's extremely user friendly and I recommend using it.

Etsy, Ebay, Wish and all those marketplaces take a commission on the transaction value.
If you're using Shopify, then you'll need a multi-channel marketing strategy to advertise via Facebook and Instagram.

Two different approaches, can't really be compared.

Yeah 1k is pretty steep just to see if you have the right idea.

Etsy has hipster types and large female audience so is perfect for jewelry. You can get bulk wholesale on aliexpress for very cheap price. Shopify you could target jewerly as well but be able to be more in control of branding. Reaching out to instagram girls and sending free jewerly to them to model can get you cheap traffic.

I had some major success with Etsy so my vote goes to Etsy. I tried Print on Demand with Etsy using Printful and Teelaunch and it worked pretty well. If you are on a budget, Etsy is the best marketplace to start with. With print on demand, it's more about your design uniqueness and then supply in time. Etsy has millions of visitors daily and people are looking for shopping, so definitely Etsy is best in my opinion.
