Hi, sorry for noob question.

How should you build backlinks for a blog, i.e

Should you be building links to the blog URL or individual posts?

Or have 4-5 "authority" blog posts, and build backlinks to these rather than "filler" posts?

It depends on what's important to you and where your keywords are. If you want to rank your home page, build links to home page, if individual posts build links to them. Or you could do both. For example, if your keyword 'blue shoes' is on the home page, rank home page, if you target 'red shoes' on an individual post, build links to that post as well.

Build like 20% to your homepage and the remaining 80% to individual pages.

hello good day,
im a noob and i want to learn.
how do go about that ?
i mean building links to your keyword.

Always use 60/40 retio!

60% for home.
40% for innerpage.

@John Gay - above does not mean that you need to be creating a post about "blue shoes" and one for "red shoes". you will confuse google on figuring out which page to rank for what. have one solid post about shoes that allows you to rank for both blue shoes and red shoes, and in parallel create corresponding backlinks to this post that highlights shoes,.

This rule is too general to follow. I've never used that ratio, never created links to my home page, alway to inner pages targeting a specific keyword, It works for me. But it also depends on an individual set up/target market. I always go for a broad niche reach in keywords, for example, one might go after hunting and target different hunting methods (there are plenty of them), another person might just go after hunting bows only. In the first broad approach, it makes more sense to create links to inner pages targeting different keyword, in the second (bows) it makes more sense to link to the home page. Like I said in my original post, it depends on the individual setup.

Your right about confusing google may be in my example the keywords 'red and blue shoes' were to close. But if someone has a website about fitness and is targetting cycling and running it's better to create separate inner pages targeting each keyword instead of mixing them in one huge article. And build links to them. I'm pretty sure that Google is capable to see the difference between cycling and running without being confused.
