Do SEOs focus too much on links?

decent content, age, backlinks. in that order :) in my experience

aga? you mean domain age? it take how long to see the real outcome? beside adding backlinks?
domain age is a given, without it, you dont have shit in the serps.
i'm talking about article age. each specific url needs at least 3 months of age before you can reap the full benefits of links. let it rank itself, setlle, then send power

On page is a must, no need to choose between the two options. If the competition is high you will not rank with links only.
As for links, niche links and guest posts no doubt are the best for search engines.

Outbound links most definitely matter for SEO. Not per se for your SEO, but for SEO in the most generic way there is. Your outbound link helps your neighbor, your supplier, your customer and of course, your visitor.

You NEED links to rank. However, lots of SEOs put way too much emphasis on links.
"Not ranking?... Buy more links!!"

Most of these are self proclaimed SEO gurus... who also happen to be link vendors.

Often onsite tweaks like changing the url structure or content updates will produce much faster and cost-effective results.

both is useless with poor content that people dont read / interact with....
search engines have long gone beyond ccounting links and keywords....

If your site has a bounce rate of 97% then no link or on-page SEO magic
will get it to the top of google for longer than a day....

Content and Backlinks, both are a very important factor for your website ranking. Let me explain it, Google goes through your content first then it calculates backlinks and it's quality of that particular page then rankbrain calculate it's relevance in order to retrieve the best results. Don't ignore the quality of backlinks.

After read all answers just got it both is important for your website i think with out links you cannot get much & more Boost

On-Page and Off-Page optimization are equally important for SEO.

On-page SEO looks at what your website or webpages are all about; whereas Off-page SEO looks at how authoritative and popular your website is.

In simple terms, On-page factors determines what you rank for, while how high you rank in the search results is determined by off-page factors.

As an SEO specialist, I would go for on-page optimization and pair it with good content that people actually want to read.

So then high DR can be reached by only on-page optimization?

It's much better to combine links and content wisely, you can not focus on one option only.

I think on page SEO optimization is quite more important, because at first you should to this. After that you can create backlinks.

Also, we need to specify site development stage. In case we talk about fresh site, just registered few days ago we should focus onsite SEO and boost building links only after several months. Then we should increase links and don't forget about onsite as well.
Also big sites like marketplaces pay attention onsite compare to backlinks.

Tons of informative reply already. You need both just one comes after another.

For the website ranking on google on page SEO and backlinks, both are important.

Better content itself helps you in gaining the good number of backlinks and you should keep your pages optimized for good conversions. So IMO both backlinks and optimization are necessary.
