I've never noticed any benefit of retweeting good/popular tweets. In fact, I see people retweet way too often and it looks like spam. The same applies with hashtags - a hashtag is best used when it's trending. If nobody is searching for that hashtag, it's pointless including it and again, looks like spam.

when you retweet popular and good tweets, people that follow you see that and they engage with you more, they retweet your tweet too when your tweets are good, they feel connected with you.
