theres a lot of other security plugins too - just search the extensions directory at joomla.org

also under no circumstances purchase jacl for access control level instead try out noixacl instead

I know this post is a couple of months old but I'm looking at access control for a joomla site right now and have come across noixacl but the documentation is thin on the ground to say the least (as in none!) - any pointers for usage? Also, if you use aMember, do you still need noixacl or similar?

NOIXACL is only for bacedn access controls not for component oreinted comtrols you need to go for JUGA or ambra...ambra is the evolution of juga.

Or go with joomsuite member..

although documentation is not very good for noiaxacl i found it relatively straight forward to install and configure regardless

am not sure what you mean its for backend access control only - you use it to control who can see front end content and who cant based on the new access levels you create

have tried out some of the other and they are more in depth which is good, but at the same time it depends what your doing, downside to the other components is that they are either paid or subscription addons, at least noiaxacl doesnt cost anything and for most people will be sufficient enough to manage access control and works well with AEC which is also free, hence why i recommend it

Actually why not wait for joomla 1.6 , changelog includes native acl controls and also commenting two features that the joomla community is crying out loud for..both will make their debut so you actually dont need all these extra components

Thanks all - figured out noixacl, like you say - straight forward enough (and amember works with the new user groups it creates out of the box which is great) - could do with more control over what's shown & what isn't (for example if you don't have access to a menu link, it won't show and you can't access it direct, but the menu header still shows etc) - have downloaded ACL and JUGA so am looking at those too at the moment - now if only there were a drip feed content release plugin based on how many days someone had been a subscriber then life would be sweeeet!

@silent_thunder - joomla 1.6 although will be publicly available later this year it wont be released as a stable version straight away, and will go through the same release candidate (bug squashing) process as 1.5 did, its advisable NOT to use release candidates for production sites.

i wouldnt expect j1.6 stable to be ready till sometime next year... for me thats way too long to wait

I've been testing it for a couple of weeks now and also need dynamically generated subdomains when someone registers. It looks to me like the domain access plugin for Drupal is the best for this. I'd happily switch back to Joomla though, if i could find something equivalent that doesn't cost a lot of money.

Just an update, the project is finished (2 sites) and I used drupal, now i'm doing two more sites with drupal - it rocks!

Agreed re the documentation, non-techs should write that, which is what part of the community plan is. I need to get active over there too.

I just started a membership site and I'm using Joomla. Interesting that you chose Drupal when everyone here recommended Joomla for the most part. I think they're probably both about equal and people just support which ever one they learned first. Kind of like Xbox 360 vs PS3.

Heh yeah :0) Mac vs PC etc, lol.

I used Drupal because the content access module is easy to configure and there's a forum access module as well which is needed as an addon as Drupal doesn't provide it by default.

I've used Joomla for a lot of sites but on reflection think Drupal is more secure and modular so you can choose from the many more modules on Drupal than Joomla.

Regarding previous comment re dynamic subdomains - if you want your members to have their own subdomain there are a two Drupal modules available and the good thing is they are created automatically so you don't have any extra admin to do.

Domain access and domain module would be worth checking out if this is what you are looking for :0)

I hope this is the right place to ask this. I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion of joomla vs drupal?

I've been using Joomla for a while now for different sites, I like the dev team and the forums there and there are some great plugins BUT would Drupal be better?

I tried Drupal out a few years ago and found it too complicated, it was the 'node' thing that threw me off. But for the longer term ongoing growing paid membership site if Drupal is the way to go then I'll have to get my head around it.

Basically I suppose I'm asking which is more reliable.

Any thoughts?

To settle the issue, I actually used both Drupal and Joomla in my domains. And of course, I also have WordPress, MediaWiki, dotProject and phpBB.

For the root and heavy-duty sections, I have Drupal installed. I based my decision by comparing the specs and picking features I need. For other non-critical sections, I have Joomla installed. But for blogs, I only use WordPress.

just migrated another membership site with 3500 users to joomla 1.5 - based the site on the comuna3 template by www.templateplazza.com and its working perfectly with community builder, doing another based on a similar setup but using the jomsocial component instead

added additional plugins, improved security and some custom coding to take it to the next level and feedback from the users has been extremely positive

Yeah but then you're basing that just on themes. There are a lot of themes out there with more being uploaded to drupal.org regularly, and it's not difficult to subtheme at all. You just reference your local.css in the theme info file and you're away. Find a great base theme and go from there :0)
