Making money as a software engineer

Hey! Long story short, I've worked as a software engineer for about 10 years. I'm absolutely fucking tired of it, and want to make money doing something else(I don't mind a mix of business, coding, design, etc).

I have about $20,000 to invest in cash, and 6 months to invest in time(~$40,000). Where should I start? I have no issue building anything, but I have an issue figuring what people need/are willing to pay for. What advice would you give an autistic 26-year-old to "read" the market?

Media buying is a terrible fucking idea if you don't know what your doing.

@MonetizerLife what are you passionate about? there will be software you will be able to write in that niche :)

Hi there. We're about the same age.

Just wondering why are you tired of working as a software engineer?

I wish I'm intelligent enough to be one. I never had a real job in life except as an intern and working as EMT during my compulsary national service. Lol

I'm earning my income onlined though.

Sports/fitness, mostly weightlifting and mountain biking. I've also recently started cross country skiing. I hike and camp a lot too(my girlfriend and I have a small outdoor brand for this because we can get so much good content, but it's taking time to get it running).

Besides that, all I do is read and play the piano.

I'm tired of it because I always have beef with management, and 90% of the work I end up doing is not needed/badly defined/not worth doing. So it's extremely demotivating to see my life fade away building rubbish that some retard with an MBA told me to do. This got especially bad when I realized an MBA gives you high school math and some verbal IQ tests. I still code outside work, but I don't want to get paid to write aby more software(unless my own users are paying me).

Also unrelated, but: I recently launched a landing page builder, but I have no clue how to market it. It has some cool features, but I'd rather wait until I find a niche of users that help me shape it into their ideal tool. Having a hard time doing this though.

You won't find better market than BHW and beta users for a website builder.

It's a great idea - if you know what you doing and 1000$ in pops is enough to know. and OP won't have to find a coder for LP and other basic shit.

Btw, If you need ideas, you can read a lot here and A LOT of stuff available here is pure gold.

Also, meanwhile, if you are interested, you can create a bot or something and sell it here on BHW.

If its the real deal (Jarvee 2.0 maybe :D), then a hell lot of people will pay a lot of money to use it.

You worked for someone else, right?

I would stick to your career but as a business owner.

Instead of coding yourself (the tiring part I'm sure) hire programmers, train them and manage them.
 
Recently I noticed that it really doesn’t matter how much you know, but what is really important is how much do developers with similar experience know comparison to you. You can have an extensive background in Java or Ruby, but if 80% of your job seeking competitors in these areas know as much as you, you will still get a same or similar salary. But still — do you want to be paid more than your competitors?

First, let’s review salary ranges based on a Ukrainian survey:

Ukraine, Junior Software Engineer, Java, 2 years: salary range is $771 and $1100 per month.
Ukraine, Software Engineer, Java, 2 years: salary range is $1140 and $1900 per month.

Can you see the difference? It is only one word: Junior. Your friend John is a lazy developer with zero ambitions. He can earn $771 per month, but you could earn $1900 per month. It is almost a 2.5 times higher salary.

What is the trick, at least in the Ukrainian software development industry? :)

You should know more, you should have extensive experience with various technologies, you should have great feedback from your managers and customers, you should always stay ahead of your direct competitors like your friend John. So, how do you get there? The first step is to learn more.

4–5 years ago I started to systematize my own knowledge in the Java area. I spent a lot of time on it and it pays me back with a bigger salary. If you are a Java software engineer, especially junior-middle level, this will be enough for you to pass at least 75% of your technical interview.

You know, I like to cut of your jib, man. I went to school for software engineering and I can say that most of us, are attitude having, non social nerds.

Post on the Wordpress forums and other website developer forums to market your landing page builder. Think like a website designer/developer: Where are they seeing most of their content outside of social media? And market there.

Also, since you know some languages, it'd probably be easy for you to learn a scripting language such as javascript, if you don't know it already. My point being, you can create the scripts that people need and sell them.

build a service site and get your own potential clients, outsource the work to other developers and you will just receive money and pay them
