Getting members to my Forum??

I previously asked this in someone else thread and didn't get the answer I was looking for, but I didn't want to push it as it wasn't my thread, so I will reask the question.
I have built a forum(not porn by the way), and I am wanting to know the best way to advertise and promote it, I know about getting backlinks and stuff, but I just want to be able to attract members to it, what is the best way? and were are the best places to advertise it?

Don't know whether you got an answer to your other post but the only way you're going to get members to your forum is a) get visitors, then b) "sell" them on joining your forum - hate to sound obvious but if you "know about getting backlinks and stuff" then presumably you're driving traffic to your site right? If that's the case and ppl aren't signing up to be members then you're not selling the membership sufficiently when they get onto your site, so look at the area that is causing you issue - either no traffic (not enough ppl), or no members (poor conversion/selling).

Like I say, hate to sound obvious, but its the best advice I can give

You need paid posters. Outsource this job to someone in india, they will populate the site and create memberships. On the other hand, try making help files regarding the topic on your forum. Usually forum users are looking for an answer, so provide them a reason to come. On the other hand, the paid posters will dramatically increase the number of visitors and in return signups.

get own posters who will make like 200-500 posts a day.Get backlinks to your forum and you will be indexed by google (hopefully with a good rank with your backlinks) and you will start getting real traffic from google to your forum.Try to answer all question on the forum and make it look like a well visited board

Thanks guys, all the help is really appreciated, I have slowly began to build up members and's it's just a matter of trial and error now to see what happens. So let the fun times begin.

If it is mainstream you can get some cheap ad spots on blogs out there that can send in some traffic. I have a url for a site that does blog ad managing but can't post it yet ;p web.blogads. com/adspotsfolder/choose_blogs

Look dude, go and post in forums which will be your same niche. Dont post ur website name just add the web url in your signature and post some useful content. make the signature size big. Its enough it will fetch lots of members . A week back i started an adult forum in a different niche. I used this method, with in 4 days i got more than 450 members.

Join myspace and yahoo groups. Become active in the groups and let people know about your forum without spamming them. You can also target people by age and interest on myspace and add them as friends.

Post a bulletin that reads "hey I just wrote a blog about (put your niche here) and I was wondering if you would like to check it out." Be creative about what you write.

Only have your website name in the blog or else people will think your are trying to spam them so try to look as innocent, friendly, and human as possible. Post comments regularly and be active within the goups.
