Is AdWords hard to learn ?

What would you do if you were me ?
What do you think about my idea to tell him that first we need to fix his technical SEO (there are a lot of things to fix), then we can focus on offsite SEO/AdWords ?
Offpage SEO really don't matter if you do an ads campaign, the important thing with SEM is that you have a good landing page and a good functional/optimized website but you can explain to him he is losing money also because of bad SEO and if you improve his SEO his site will rank better thus more potential clients. Also there is plenty of info on the internet how to do a good ad campaign but then again you need also to track and analyze the ad performance, DEMO, split-test and optimize.

I've planned to tell him how doing AdWords is not the best idea when your website has poor SEO, but I haven't found any article to back my words up, all I found was articles talking about AdWords affecting the SEO.

Could you give me some starting leads in order to prep my speech about this issue ? Thanks man ;)

If you know SEO, it is very easy to learn adwords. All experts I know have adwords badge and all they do the same, that adwords expect from them - auto bid.

Adwords is easy as wordpress. But before you learn adwords inside, read on how to use it. As example many people recommend remarketing only on more than 30 000k monthly visitors.

First think you must learn in your situation is how to tell the buyers it is mostly for brand building and not to expect sales and this is 20% of adwords skills. It is actually very easy - just tell them how cost effective are repeat buyers and also tell them that everybody want to spend a sum and get daily % on it on autopilot, but it is not easy and require time and patience.

I'm sorry but I don't really understand your post :(
By the way, as I stated in the first post, they already spend 10k a month on AdWords so I guess they have some idea on how this all works ?

This really makes me consider the option to tell him yes and learn while doing it, especially if we get to talk on the phone : I won't be able to sound as professional as I do when I talk about SEO :/

I will pray for your client budget.

Ahaha well the following things are to be taken into consideration :

  • They are two guys selling watches/jewelry, and they do the AdWords campaigns by themselves so I doubt they are experts at it
  • I looked their business up and they banked 1.5M in 2016, so they are making a lot of money ; this kinda tells me they are already burning that money in a sense

That's why I'm tempted to tell him yes : maybe me beginning at SEA but being good at SEO will give me an advantage over them, and allow me to lose them less money than they are currently losing.

What do you think ?

Well, I'm riscking to not understand me one more time :).

What I mean is most of the experts are not really ecperts so - Just do this, you can even offer free trial (while you learn it)!

My best ROI from adwords were 5% on really low budget adds. The client spent/split 40% from the profits with google and were unhappy as hell, but this is actually very good percent on very cheap products, when adding the value of the returning buyers, SEO, expirence with clients.

First consider the niche:
- profit per sale
- search quantity
- competition

Ask them how many of the proffits or per sale they are ready to split with g00g.
Check how many goals are completed from organic search and divide it on 5 for adwords. The problem is adwords and analitycs showing completed goals late and when buyer check for the current date may see 0. So if the goal completion in analitycs from organic search showing 10% tell them, that can expect 2% ROI from adwords.

Campaigns you can't get wrong with:
- cheap cpc using pages in index
- remarketing (if low traffic site still good to show pottential)
- products using business data (dynamic adds) - low conversations, but the buyers getting impressed from the looks
Always add addon links, description, phone, place in the add even it is not always displayed.

Damn I have a feeling this story will be giving me one hell of a headache

Thanks for your reply ;)

I would say SEO would cut your adwords budget in "whatever" and then pitch organic traffic success stories.

It's easy to get started, but takes time and money to be a pro at it. In your case I would outsource to someone who's already an expert. Check out upwork if you want quality work.

I would outsource it watch over their shoulder like an intern.

Hi,

There's this client who asked us if we do AdWords campaigns. Thing is, all we ever did was SEO.
Now SEMrush tells me he spends more than 10k a month on his campaigns, so I don't want to miss such an opportunity.

What do you guys think ?

Obviously as someone pointed out you can outsource it and yes you can do it for initial month or so and learn adwords in the meantime. It does not take much time and rest all comes with experience. You don't need to wait for months to see results unlike SEO and within a month you will have enough number to make and implement your own strategies for the campaigns.

I'll look into that. But as I've stated, I don't really feel comfortable outsourcing it because when I'll have calls with the client and he asks me about adwords all I'll be able to say is "sorry i'm not the one managing it".

What if he wants to talk to the person doing it ? I don't want him to know I'm outsourcing it :(

People who consider Adwords difficult have never done anything truly difficult in IM.

Adwords is very easy.
Millions of tutorials everywhere, both text and video, big community around it, intuitive interface, millions of users.
Open an account, put in $100, play with it for a day and watch tutorials as you go along. If you're not stupid, you'll be Adwords expert in the evening.

I started my first Adwords campaign about 3 months ago. Spent 20€, got lots of clicks and one conversion which turned out to be a worthless one.

I redesigned my website completely, made better CTAs, better landing page and now my conversions are through the roof. The niche (it's a service) I'm targeting is saturated with competition. I removed the exact keywords such as "xxx service" because they are saturated and I'm only targeting "xxx" which is a very general term. I feel that people who are searching for "xxx" have less knowledge about it and have less demands. The CPC is much smaller and because the title of my ad says "xxx SERVICE WITH 50% DISCOUNT" people who are looking for something free don't click on the ad at all because they know they'll have to pay.

Example: Instead of targeting "vacuum cleaner repair service", I'm bidding on "vacuum cleaners". Maybe I got it all wrong, but it works for me.

I've been getting over 1200% in returns in the past 3 weeks (2-3 conversions per week) and I'll increase the budget in the next couple of days. I feel this is something that will last at least another few years, so I'll milk it as much as I can.
