For the majority of people running real, well-trafficked websites, managing their own VPS is 1. risky and 2. not feasible. Using a managed WP host like WPX or Kinsta is what's actually worth 'going the extra mile'.
Why is running your own vps/server not feasible with traffic?
If you don't configure firewalls and take other steps yes it's going to be risky. Taking control of your own site and learning how to manage your own hosting (even if you do it with baby steps and find a company that offers hand holding) then it's going to be for the best. Having a "managed" solution is only going to take you so far before hopefully you outgrow the service they offer.
