Facebook has been caught asking people to enter their e-mail account's password in order to register on the platform.

According to the article, Facebook is not asking people to enter their email passwords. It is about logging in, not while registering.
Logging in with a VPN could be enough to make the password request appear.

I love Facebook. They have had their mistakes, some really bad, that's for sure. But I feel as of late, media has been trying so hard to hit Facebook from all fronts. Wonder who's behind this "dirty war"...
