Sold a website - Now what?

So being an IT guy, sometimes friends will call me for all kinds of stuff. Today, a buddy called me and told me there's a new hair salon and they are looking to get a website made that is affordable. He asked if I was interested. I know nothing about making websites but money is money so I said Yes.

I spoke with the owner, sent him an unrehearsed sales pitch and he was ecstatic and agreed to my price. By the sound of his voice, I grossly undercharged lol. Oh well, he can perhaps spread the word if I do this right. Here is what I offered:

200$ for the website design
150$ per year to keep the website online.
If he wants modifications, it will be billed hourly.
If he wants SEO services, it will be much more expensive but well worth it to spread the word.

For now, he wants the 200$ website and 150$ per year. Once that's up and running, I will pitch him SEO stats and social media etc.

So, umm, where do I get this responsible website made at an affordable price?

$200 for a good functional website, with the right on page SEO, marketing, probably a booking system for $200? Fuck that!! But plenty of tier 3 people will do it for that price, maybe $150 but quality in general is going to suck at that price. Plenty of people on fiverr and if you post a thread in the LF freelancer section BHW you will probably find someone too.

Or you could do it yourself it's not that hard if you are a bit creative.

You can get Zakra wordpress theme for a business website. It's responsive and best thing is it comes with demo.
You just need to change the images and content.

keep it nice a simple ,probably wordpress you can build it yourself .just look out for a nice site in the niche or better still get the punter to show you one they like .dont add too many functions this way you can pull some more money of it .like a booking form or links to the facebook business page you can build him for $80 lol .you need to squeeze a little more though on the upsell for sure .hosting can be brought for the whole year for around $40-$50 range so theres an extra hundred straight away

Great tip. I'll get my sales pitch ready for our official meeting. I even looked up the hairstylist in their area and the competition is shit. Google business, the top guy only has 13 reviews...

I just don't know if a new shop has a budget but I'll try to sell the services we have in our marketplace with a markup.

google is another but you can break it down .first is the listing a few pics and basic listing, later on when he asks you why he doesnt rank high you can charge him again .getting legit reviews can be hard to get at first but you can recommend something like show me your google review for 10% off your next visit or something like that .they are all extras is my point .dont over sell what you can do because he will expect alot .check out graphic river for some inspiration maybe you can take some screen shots along with you

wordpress + elementor, et it's done in 2 hours top.
However, for this pricing, even it's low, but fair because it's only a matter of 2/3 hours, I'm afraid you'll spend many many many time on the communication (email, skype, phone call with the clients)
So unless you make like lawyer that charged after the 1st minute of the call, your time is money.
I would tell him that for such price, you'll need to be focus and receive all the graphics, visual,... before starting to work. And then, you pick already made theme with a design, you pick like 5 templates, and you ask him to choose one of them.
This way, you won't loose time on little things

your getting paid to learn something new thats how i would look at it ,get a free hairdresser theme replace the images .give him a homepage contact and about us .add a cookie plug in .done .pay $40 for the year and you get free hosting for any further projects .he wants a booking form show him a paid version charge him that and get a free one .you must b clear that this is a basic website though or he might not like what he gets or he may just say i was thinking something nicer with strings and bows and now your already earning bigger money .

Haha I just see a new opportunity and you should never say no to that. I might not turn a profit on this but I'm banking on the fact that when businesses have websites, they probably will never take it down. If I could have redone my offer, I would probably have changed the 150$ per year to something like 39$ per month. I'm not worried about the low offer, this forum has my back with all the advice I have already received. This is kinda like a new journey and if I figure this out, who knows, maybe 1 client will become 100 clients and then everything changes. Gotta start somewhere.

You're doing things the wrong way around. You have agreed on a price for this guys website and now you need to look around for someone to make it cheaper for you. You undersold your own time and cut pretty deep into your margins.

Live and learn though, you'll know better what to charge next time around. Get your pricing right, replicate, upsell.

Here is advice if you want to save on hosting. Simply sign up for Google Cloud and you will get $300 free credits for the 1st year.
There you can simply create a Wordpress instance. All you need is a credit card, they won't charge you anything it's just for verification.
Advice: Don't use their DNS, they will charge you about $2 per month. Simply point your domain to a public IP address using A record.
For all other things, they use your free credit balance.

That's it an easy way to get hosting for free.

Yep but I was put on the spot. I didn't have the time to do proper research. I'll definitely get my pricing right for the next jobs!

To be transparent, when I gave quoted him, I have upwork in my mind. Thought I could find someone for 100$ to do it, pocket the rest and earn 150$ per year. Easy money. Obviously, my thinking had holes in it lol.

I am thinking grab a theme from the DL section edit it, refer them to a hosting provider that pays the maximum referral commission. (You can make an extra $50-60)

About a month ago I had a chat with a guy who was from Quebec, the dude said he charges about $500 per site, and outsource the work to Fiverr for $100- 200 and pocket the difference. I checked his sites, but these were pretty shitty imho.
